Nefarious: A friend, a scammer, an enigma
Nefarious: A friend, a scammer, an enigma
I first met Nef a couple months back. A friend had introduced him to me and we started working on some projects together. After a while, all our work paid off, and the things we worked for came to fruition.
Then, jekkis started asking where Nef was. Nef had taken a considerable amount of gold from jekkis to purchase a bear rug for him, and Nef immediately became difficult to communicate with. Every day becoming more worried, jekkis tried and tried to contact Nef but Nef wouldn't respond, though he would read his PMs. After day 5 we decided it was time to take action and I notified Nef I would be removing him as a friend from a house at a prime location we shared and ran vendors at, unless he contacted me back with an explanation.
The next day, today, I received a PM from Nef on the forums notifying me that Nef had scammed upwards of 14 people, including his guild mates and friends, citing his reasoning only being that this is a game and that this will only be a 'speed bump' for his reputation. I was also informed he would be quitting for no less than a year.
I don't think this is just a speed bump. This is a mountain that is to never be passed. He screwed over people who trusted him and befriended him, not just some people who he did business with. We spent hours together in game and in chat, working together, trying to build things, and he threw it all away with this. For what? Gold? In exchange for real life trust?
On behalf of the Merchants of Britannia, I apologize to the players of this shard who were harmed by his actions. His actions were disdainful and a shame for the guild.
ANY evidence you have of borrowing money from Nef and him promising to pay you back, please send it to an admin. He will not be allowed to do business here again.

I am deeply sorry for your loss but I have to say that this is exactly why UO might just be the best game out there. Hope you manage to recover your lost goods. Maybe he will decide to come back and make amends, surely that would be one step closer to climbing the mountain. Since he thinks this is 'just a game' maybe he will realize that the personal relationships he built are more important than pixels. Or maybe he is just as big of a d-bag in real life and he does the same to his life friends. Just as in real life, friends become enemies, become friends, mess with each other's spouses, become friends and so life goes on.

Over the summer we caught him selling bone piles as bone containers on his vendor, also. This is nothing new to me unfortunately. I am sorry that you were scammed by him.

I wasn't scammed by him. As he told me, he spared me because we were friends. He could have easily asked to borrow any amount of gold from me and I would have done it.
Still, it was a slap in the face.

Re: Nefarious: A friend, a scammer, an enigma
I'm glad to hear all is good in Nef's life (real world), as for some moments I pondered the option something bad had happened and he could no longer be around due to whatever personal reasons. At the same time, however, I wouldn't hesitate a second if it was in my power to ban him from the forums and IRC. I'm sure I'll be around in a year or so when he comes back and over the few months I've played here, I've made a good bunch of friends who are one of the most important reasons for being around. Along with me, those friends will no doubt remember what Nef did when the day comes he returns to UOSA.
Every scam takes at least one person who isn't thinking clearly and in this case it was me. Had this happened 12 years ago, it would probably have been a larger than life issue for the 14-year old jekkis. These days life fortunately consists of other eras than that of T2A, some of them don't bring back as good memories as the game does (talk about a bathroom renovation...) but make you realize there's a whole lot more to life than some two million of pixel gold. With that, I can always take solace to the fact that while he may have taken me over in the pixel business, he's still got 25 miles left in the marathon to catch me.
So, enjoy life during your year off, Nef. I bet milling those same patterns with a CNC machine day after day is very rewarding. I will still be more successful than you when you come back - because I work for it.

Sounds like he didn't do anything against UOSA rules. Shard admins won't be able to help unless he was selling things for real money, cheating, or using the forums as a venue for these scams.Abbot wrote:I first met Nef a couple months back. The closest thing you could compare what he did was a ponzi scheme. He promised high return on investment for many, and then just dropped. He made deals to obtain items for people. All this was done on irc and forums. Plenty of evidence exists. He'll be banned, if the system works.chumbucket wrote:Sounds like he didn't do anything against UOSA rules.
