Old Habits--Outsider

Post by DwMcAliley »

Ascher pulled lightly on the reins, and his horse stepped quietly to a stop. Through the trees, Ascher could make out the shape of a tower wall, the battlements rising above the surrounding under brush. It was rough stone, hewn and shaped by hand and by the elements. In the distance, lights flickered from the Shrine. Ascher almost raised a knuckle to his forehead when he looked in the direction of the sacred site. It was something his mother had done long ago.

His hand fell back to his lap.

There were people moving in the village. Ascher could hear them on the breeze, chatting and laughing. He wondered briefly if they could hear him breathing. Ascher snorted softly and shook his head, he breathed in a heavy sigh, but let it out slowly. Just in case.

A sound behind him caught his ears, and in a flash, the serpentine kryss that had been at his side was in his hand, a leather buckler strapped to his left wrist spun into place, guarding his heart.

Back among the trunks, a pair of beady red eyes glared back at him. A ratman, trying to figure out if he was worth the trouble. Ascher growled low and deep in the back of his throat. The ratman blinked a few times, hissed a low hiss, and backed away into the shadows.

Ascher watched him go, then listened to the soft rustle of the leaves and twigs as the creature scurried away. When the sound finally faded, Ascher relaxed a little, but didn't sheathe his blade. The ratman would be back, and probably with friends.

Ascher cast one last glance over his shoulder at the village. It seemed like a happy place.

Then, with his knees and a click from his tongue, Ascher turned his horse back towards the woods, and resumed his patrol. He felt the faded brand of the Keepers rub as he adjusted the strap on his buckler. He ignored the memories and nudged his horse after the ratman.

Some habits died hard.

Turning about as if sensing something in the trees, Haggard peers into the woods. Shaking his head, and assuring himself it was only his mind, he returned to tacking the poster. "Hopefully we won't have anymore dead hunters," he muttered to himself, "everyone's a hero."
