Lag at busier times. European thing?

Post by dannysatch »

Hi guys,

I've just come back to secondage recently. When there are over around 300 players on the server I am experiencing some nasty lag. (Never had this when I played before on secondage)

Nasty pings

I'm based in the UK so don't expect the best of connections but the lag makes the game almost unplayable. Are any other european players experiencing this?

When the server is quiet my connection appears to be fine.

Here is a little video capture of it.

and that's it when its not too bad. Normally a lot worse.

Any insights or opinions would be appreciated.

Long live UOSA! :D

Aye, I get that aswell. It's far from unplayable for 90% of activities but if you need to sprint off on a horse you will feel it. I've noticed a few threads cropping up recently with people experiencing lag so I think it might be an issue with the increased server load as the shard gains more players/items etc. Have faith, im sure the staff are working on speeding things up for us.

In the meantime if you havent got one already, make a stealth archer/mage/thief/etc. When you spend most of your time sneaking about on foot you really don't need a decent connection to have fun. :)

Of course the old unchecking smart cpu usage on razor, forward the ports on your router and ensuring firewalls etc are all configured correctly may help, but I'm guessing you've already covered those bases.

Did you change your ISP or anything in your home lan in this meantime you werent playing?

I get real lag, but it is surely from my ISP as the lag happens when the shard is almost empty (im in asia).

What type of connection to the internet do you have?

Cable/DSL/Wireless?

Thanks for the replies.

My ISP hasn't changed. I'm on an ADSL connection. I don't see it as a bandwidth issue on my end as my connection is fairly rapid both downstream and upstream.

I guess i'll just give it a few weeks and see if things improve.

thats an unusually high ping. when i lived in the uk i used to ping between 150-200 depending on whether i was at home or at uni, with 1mb and 4mb connections respectively. other people i know who have connected from the uk don't ping higher than 200 for the most part. have you tried a trace route and/or talking to your isp?

I think "correlation is not causation" may apply to this issue.

The busier times may be co-inciding with another anomoly on the internet (route may be overloaded) or your machine (virus/etc) or more local factors.

It could be your ADSL provider as well trying to save bandwidth usage by applying some sort of scheme which means that you get less priority then other subscribers based on which package you picked.

I think this is exactly my problem. Im in Thailand and in the most populated times around here (6:00PM here, 09:00AM US) it is just unplayable. But I picked a very popular plan in a big promotion, so I think they give priority to the other plans...

Possibly an issue somewhere on the route. tracert isn't giving any clues though to be honest.

My ADSL package is the top end from a niche gaming ISP with a static IP...so I just can't seeing it being that.

I'll try it off some different comps to rule out virus/etc.

Cheers again.

it seems odd that a couple extra people on the shard would make your ping jump from 150 avg to 400-500 ;s

Are you directly connected to your ADSL Modem/Router or is it done through wireless?

the trace route looks fine. from my experience, the only times i've had really bad lag like that (outside of actually isp/connection problems) is when people in my house have been downloading. if you live with people and they use torrenting programs, ask them very nicely to limit their uploads to 10-15kb/s. it shouldn't affect their download speed and you'll notice a HUGE improvement in latency.

other than that, there is no reason whatsoever why you should be pinging significantly higher than 200 on this shard from the uk. a decent connection should be getting you 150-180ms roughly if i recall correctly.
