IP banned?

Does anyone know how to tell definitively if you've been IP banned?

The other day, I introduced my roommate to UO. I showed him how to log on, create a character, and how to use the razor macros I had set up. When I came home from work today, I discover that I could no longer connect to the server, and I ask him if he knew what had happened. He said he was macroing, got disconnected, and couldn't connect anymore. Eventually, it came out that he had created two characters with obscene names...

So, since I still can't connect, I am wondering if there is any way that I tell for sure what has happened?

And beyond that, if in fact, we have been IP banned, if there is any way of pleading on our hands and knees to get the ban lifted?

Try again... The server went down today for a couple hours.

It is very rare that UOSA has unscheduled downtime, but I am assuming this is what you experienced.
