You don't need to do fishing poles, though. I switched to Q-staffs from wooden shields as soon as I could make them (not on purpose--it just takes the wooden shield's gump position... skill level was 71ish I believe) and it seemed to continue to gain all right. I can't comment on whether skill gain is more efficient this way (compared with fishing poles), but I remember seeing a post where somebody else did it this way and they allegedly used less boards (50k +/-5k they said) than another post I saw where they created fishing poles (they said something around 65k)... if memory serves me correctly, of course.

Alot of great guides can be found here.

I documented my progression, method and cost from 50 carpentry to GM here. Here is a quick quote of what I wrote:
Hicha wrote:Starting Skill | Item Created | Boards
61.9 (50.7 real) | Wooden Shield | 3500
65.7 (55.6 real) | Wooden Shield | 2500
69.3 (60.3 real) | Wooden Shield | 3900
74.0 (66.4 real) | Quarter Staves | 4000
77.4 (70.8 real) | Quarter Staves | 3000
80.3 (74.5 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
82.2 (77.0 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
84.3 (79.7 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
86.9 (83.1 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
89.0 (85.8 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
91.1 (88.5 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
93.1 (91.1 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
95.5 (94.2 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
96.2 (95.2 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
97.4 (96.7 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
98.4 (98.1 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
99.2 (99.0 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4000
99.5 (99.5 real) | Gnarled Staves | 4151
100.0

Total boards used: 69,051
Total cost of boards: 138,102gp (@ 2gp per board)
Vendoring items created: 95,343gp
Cost difference (@ 2gp per board): -42,758gp

42,758gp to GM carpenty is pretty good considering the amount of time and material it takes to GM the skill. The profit would've been a lot higher had I been the only one vendoring at the time. I used 4 organizer agents within the macro to move the staves into four pouches that my alt could pick up, vendor, then drop off without interrupting the macro. Rotating between several vendors allows you to sell for the highest price and doing so in batches allows the vendor to reset by the time you need to make your rounds again.

I followed Hicha's guide above way back when and my results lined up with his pretty well.
