How do you get big pics to post for selling stuff?

I can't get large sized pics to post when listing my items. I realize that there is a 256KB pic size but when i post them they are tiny and hard to read. Is there a way can "upsize" them and still keep them under 256KB? Does is it have to do with the resolution of the game or my computer monitor resolution?
Or am i just a bad picture taker? hehehe

I upload pics to photobucket and use the [IMG] code to insert them.
