You are understanding it correctly.

People sometimes block off the surrounding tiles with impassable objects such as chairs or chests in order to prevent screw-ups.

Ah good idea. I use the table method for extra security by my door can a forge act in place of a table or can an intruder just axe my forge if they are in my house?

Only the owner can axe add-ons, you are pretty much safe using a barrier of anvils/forges.
