  • You must be within 3 steps of an NPC vendor and have Line of Sight to converse with them, or buy and sell.
    • Previously the required distance varied between some vendors.
    • This does not apply to Bank, Stable, or Claim.
  • There is now a slight delay in response when talking to an NPC. This behavior was noted on OSI and has been replicated here.
  • Animal Trainers are invulnerable.
  • NPC vendors restock policy was slightly modified so that purchased goods, especially scrolls remain in stock longer.
  • The standard range for normal speech is now 9 (down from 15), Yell remains unchanged at 18 tiles.
  • Added check for steps borders in house placement, land adjacent to steps must be level.
    • This should prevent placing houses with steps that cannot be walked onto.
  • A speech throttle for spam was introduced. Very fast repeated text will cause you to be squelched for a short time.

Thanks to Batlin for uncovering the details on the speech ranges in this thread: Town Vendor Npc Command Range

Update Feb 29:
  • The speech throttle was eased quite a bit; should be less of an issue now when performing normal actions.
  • There was a bug found in the NPC delay effectively doubling (or more) their delay. This has been corrected.

What constitutes spamming?

ie. saying x lines of text in x amount of time = squelch.

also how long does the squelch last?

Wondering because I spam vendor sell while selling items./recalling

Patch Notes:

"A speech throttle for spam was introduced. Very fast repeated text will cause you to be squelched for a short time."

- Is this era accurate?
- If not: Was it meant to reduce bandwidth/Server costs?
+ if not: Its the first anti-community implement i've seen so far.

Why would it be anti community?

I belilve spamming in certain areas was squelchable in era, but I don't think it was automated, as much as a GM had to go and do it himself.

9 tiles to bank is a pain in the ass now. Please change it back to 15 as there was no issue with it being 15.......

Yes, there was. The issue is that it wasn't accurate.

There was a server side mechanic on the OSI servers for limiting spam, that's what the client warns you about. RunUO doesn't haven't a similar system, so this was added.

It was primarily introduced at this time due to the changes to NPC responses and the amount of additional processing and memory that's required. It's however been a feature that's been desired for a long time. There was previously no limit at all on speech, and the amount of data that could potentially be sent was scary.
