Treasure Map Chest Loot

Post by Mikel123 »

I found a remarkable post in the archives, detailing every single item pulled from a level 5 treasure chest! This is from Jan, 1999.

Here is a quick summary of what was found; details below. I just did a L5 map last night, wish I still had it to compare.

49 gems
10 weapons
10 armors
100 reagents
8 clothing/jewelry of magic (note that the bear mask had magical properties, and the charges seem to go from 1 to 100 or so)

Also...
While I was picking the lock, a poison elemental, blood elemental, daemon, or elder gazer would spawn right next the chest at random intervals of between 3 and 20 seconds.
WTF?

I think its been common consensus that treasure map loot has been gimped. Somewhere I got the impression that this was done to keep the magic weapon market honest so that everyone's not running around with top end weapons at low costs. I don't recall having heard that from admin; just suggested by players in past threads on the topic. I'm glad you found that info tho. I don't want just everybody packing uber weapons but I'm not certain I believe having accurate treasure loot would cause this. In any case you shouldn't be getting more loot from the monsters than you do from the chests and frankly I feel that compared to farming they really aren't worth doing.

I actually think this looks pretty similar to what we have. But I was hoping someone with a level 5 map would pull it and check. (I'm happy to buy them for 12.5k each and record the data myself, but they seem to go for some pretty ridiculous prices these days that make them not really worth it to me).

Thanks for this post, I'm very interested in seeing a comparison as well. The cheasts are designed to be the same, although I am well aware that they differ; i'd like to know how similar they are to this listing as well.

I dunno, I've picked dozens of lvl5 chests, this loot table seems comparable to me. Never got any rings though. As well as enchanted armor pieces and masks (although I had a discussion with Derrick about this)

Issue is that bear/deer masks + armor pieces (studded tunic, chainmail coif, etc) don't have the chance to spawn with magical properties either. (strength, bless, feeblemind, reflect, etc)
[14:17] <UOSAPlayer4056> cr3w guild is a joke. Ran by staff members, multi client pking, this shards a joke and a half.

Same page:
gresh wrote:This is how it works in a nutshell:

Certain monsters have a chance to spawn a treasure map as part of
their regular loot. These maps can only be decoded by someone using
the Cartography skill. The toughest maps (see below) will require GM
Cartography.

The map decoder and only the map decoder may take the map to the
general vicinity of the area depicted on it, and begin to dig at or
near the spot marked X on the map ... the higher their mining skill,
the larger the radius that they search in with each attempt, from 9
tiles with 0 mining up to 81 surrounding tiles with GM Mining *per
attempt*.

When they hit the right spot, a treasure chest, probably locked and
trapped, rises out of the ground, and its guardians, if any, spawn to
protect the chest, by attacking anyone in the vicinity. These
guardians have special AI programming that pevents them from leaving
the area of the chest ... to open the chest in peace, and loot it, you
will have to kill the monsters that spawn.

There will be 5 levels of treasure maps, yielding progressively better
loot, and requiring progressively higher Cartography, Lockpicking, and
Detect Hidden skills ... the lowest monster they spawn on is likely to
be the Orc Mage, and the highest level maps will be (rarely) found on
"boss" monsters like blood elementals and lich lords.

If you really want to fin out more, go check it out !! It's up and
running on TC, and there are gates there to advance the skills you
need.

You don't use the mining skill (i.e. you won't suddenly gain 5 points
of mining and lose other skills), but your mining skill determines how
close you need to be to "the spot" when you dig.

>a chest and monster spawn appear?

Right.

Nope, the spawn doesn't happen until you dig up the treasure, and only
the person that decoded the map can do that.

So it seems pretty much like we have already implemented this as described by the google groups.

Loot feels about the same.

i have had bear masks with both positive and negative attributes out of chests. no armor though.

i seem to always get rings in lv5 chests (usually 2), but have never seen one in lv1-4.
a tall straw hat of spell reflection (77) charges
spell reflection is so rare here, and i've never seen anything with as many charges as that.

OK, just pulled up a level 5. Contents as follows:

5000 gold pieces
25 scrolls level 5 through 8
156 reagents
22 gems
14 magic weapons (including pickaxe and gnarled staff)
14 magic armors (including orc helm)
12 magic jewelry/clothing

So, the differences between what the 1999 person found and what we have? We have:

about 25 fewer gems
4 extra weapons
4 extra armors
56 extra reagents
4 extra clothing/jewelry

Other things I learned... that guy found a ring of teleporting with 2 charges, which I don't think we even spawn here. Likewise, charges seem to go up to at least 85 (not sure what our cap is... 75?). Lastly, we seem to have a crapload of "Cunning", "Clumsy", etc., charges. Obviously 8 pieces is no great sample size, but I think we greatly oversample the number of these items (the stat modifiers) that existed.

I am pretty sure that's just item ID.

I've seen fireball/lightning up to 20 charges I believe, and as low as 3 I think. Greater Heal seems to spawn between 3 and 10. Other than that, I don't really keep anything else so I don't notice.

Hey just wanted to throw in a few words. I have done many level 5's, and I have gotten teleporting rings out of them. Also I have gotten wands and staves with more than 20 charges of lightning/fireball. I believe 24 charges was the highest I have gotten, thats just off the top of my head. The loot tables seem similar however its odd that I still to this point have gotten my best pulls(high end weps) out of lower level chests. I know that the level does not necessarily mean you are going to get a high end weapon, but I figured Id just throw that out there.

Also, with magic reflection, I have gotten items with as much as 97 charges through tmaps.

Ah cool, good to know about the magic reflect.

I just found a 25-charge wand, so perhaps that is actually the max, for lightning and fireball.

I think the weapons are random, i.e. the same chance of being awesome whether level 1 or level 5 chest. But, with so many more of them in a level 5 chest, you have a higher chance of pulling a good one.
