Potion Display

Post by Robbbb »

Currently when you click a potion it does not tell you if it is a 'greater heal' or 'lesser heal' potion. This doesnt look to be correct based on a bit of research.

> lesser potions or greater potions.

> Thanks.

If when single clicked it says "a greater heal" (for example), well, it's
a greater potion.

False. Any and all potions are automatically ID'd for *everybody*. Buy
a potion from a player alchemist or his/her vendor. Or loot one off
another player. Guess what, that player made heal potion is already
ID'd, "a greater heal potion". As far as monster loot goes, those
potions are actually a different "strength" then the corresponding
"lesser" potion. Although a yellow potion may heal the same range as a
lesser heal, there are also such situations as "a blue potion", which
raises dexterity by 15, whereas the player made equivalents raise dex by
10 or 20, never 15.

I have kegs of potions, maybe stolen, I don't remember, but they say things like 'a keg of greater heal potions'. I forget the exact text. Other kegs say nothing, but if the two are the same type, I am able to add potions to the keg that does tell the type, and when I take a potion out of it, that potion will reveal its type on a single click. If I then put that potion in a new keg, voila, that keg and its potions' types will forever be known to me, and I don't have taste id.

These notes are before the changes to taste identification introduced with the November 23 patch.

Potion Kegs can be Taste IDed (Information on Taste ID and potion kegs is below).
Potions from alchemy kegs not Taste IDed will only return the color of the liquid when looked at.
Currently tasting beverages (wine, ale, water, etc.) is not functional.
This just states that potions FROM kegs, it says nothing about potions that are created in the bottle.

I will do more research on this.

This clearly states that the potion is only unknown once put into a keg:

Are you saying that potions you're Alchemist are making are being
created as 'unknown <color>' potions? If so, something is wrong:(

>And when one of my other characters takes potions from a Keg..it doesn't
>say it is Greater Heal..just says "unknown yellow potion"..why?

It works rather oddly actually. If a character puts a 'known' potion
into an empty keg, that character becomes an 'owner' of the keg. A
keg is labeled only for an owner. All potions extracted from a keg by
an owner are labeled with the quality (greater heal, lesser heal,
heal) for everyone.
Any non-owner will see the keg as 'unknown' and
all potions extracted by a non-owner will be of 'unknown' quality to
everyone. To make a character an owner, the character must
successfully Taste ID the keg. More than one character can be an
owner of the same keg... it remembers it's owners.

You may add an 'unknown' potion to an 'unknown' keg as long as the
potion is the same type and quality as is in the keg.

You may not add a 'known' potion to an 'unknown' keg even if it *is*
the same type and quality.

I haven't tried adding an 'unknown' potion to a 'known' keg yet.

December 6 1999:
I did find it interesting that having my Lumberjack taste ID the keg
(and all the potions came out ID'd to her and others afterwards)
*didn't* make the keg unknown for my Alchemist (who filled the keg in
the first place).

This is the most detailed post on how the kegs worked that I have found so far:

For reference, the information about potion kegs from the last newsgroup post is from here. Beyond that, the potion keg information is important as it details the conditions where a potion is identified or not (it should be noted that the information in these post is different from that in the above link). Also, this FAQ on potions verifies that all player made potions are identified to everyone when created (a later archive points out the usefulness of Taste ID on kegs).

to ID potions with no skill (and you haven;t made) get a empty keg, put a unknown potion in it......for some reason here it'll ID it for you ie ''a keg of greater heal. it's very empty'' empty keg back into bottle and it's now ID'd in the bottle too.

probably a bug but useful.

Era-Accuracy, but sad to see all the "rare" named one's instantly become nothing. Value is irrelevant, it was just kinda neat to have unique items like that floating around on the shard. Kinda added to the flavor of things. *shrugs*

Perhaps they can give the old, previously unique ones, a slightly different name to maintain that bit of history on the shard?

Maybe the most Trammel post I've ever seen. Or, gold sink idea! RARE INSURANCE! You can buy insurance from derrick and if your rare is found to be not rare, he will spend time re-raring it.
