Guide : Provocation

Post by Derrick »

ULTIMA ONLINE : PLAYGUIDE : SKILLS wrote:PROVOCATION
Associated Professional Title: Bard
Main Statistic Used: Dexterity
Supplemental Statistic Used: Intelligence
Skill Use: Direct
Trained By: Bard, Bard Guildmaster

Description:
This skill is used to encourage other creatures to fight one other. You will need a musical instrument to accomplish this task. To use the skill, first select the provocation skill from the skills list, target the instrument you wish to use (or the game will remember the one you last used), and then click in turn on each of the creatures you wish to fight one another. If you are successful the two creatures will fight for a time consistent with their respective natures and dispositions. Please keep in mind that you cannot provoke other characters.
ULTIMA ONLINE : PLAYGUIDE : SKILLS
Additional Notes:
  • A creatures ability to be provoked by you while attacking you is based on his intelligence
  • Even at GM there is still a chance of failure.
  • You may not provoke any vendors in town.
  • If you fail to provoke it is the equivalent of a harmful action against your targets.
  • Provocation is not difficulty based.

To raise the skill do you need to practice provoking animals or monsters of higher int, or it doesn't matteR?

Have been provoking a dog to attack me. stuck at 50.2. Does it not go up if I provoke it on myself?

It raises if you tell it to attack yourself. However, I don't believe you could provoke npc's on yourself back then, but I am not a hundred percent positive on it. This probably could be verfied through the demo.

I see most people train music and provo all in one... But I'm trying to GM music first and then gm provo. Which works better? I'm just planning to go to moonglow zoo soon so i can just provo that dire wolf on me for a couple days. If you see me in game hit me up, the name is Dirge.
Characters :: Dirge - bard, iTZ DiRGE - mage, Ezra - dexxer

While raising music to about 90, I noticed the gains became slow and I hardly ever failed the music check. Just get music to about 90 if you don't want to miss too often.

So out of curiosity, what's the formula / chance of success for provocation in T2A? I tried the wayback machine, but all it shows is around 2002 when it was already difficulty based. The only 'early' page I can find is an essay with some generalities, such as "With 100 Music and 80 Provoke, you will have about an 80% success rate" - http://web.archive.org/web/200101180214 ... bard.shtml

So I know Derrick said that it's not difficulty based, and that it's still possible to fail at GM - so I was just wondering what that chance is :)

Thanks,
-kat

Chance to provoke = (Music + Provo) / 2

Aye, I've found it's easier to GM provocation after musicianship - whether or not this is true, I can't be certain.

After macroing in stables and other similar locations a while and suffering from some annoyances (such as people taming the animals, and then setting them to follow me...), I found the best way to raise if you don't have a house is to use the dire wolf at the Moonglow zoo, as mentioned previously. I attempted this originally, but didn't see any gains, but now that I have GM musicianship, gains are great, it's safe, and you don't have to worry about that wolf disappearing on you.

Here's the macro I set up:

Code: Select all

!Loop
Assistant.Macros.ForAction|6
Assistant.Macros.UseSkillAction|22
Assistant.Macros.WaitForTargetAction|30
Assistant.Macros.AbsoluteTargetAction|0|0|39499|4530|1383|23|225
Assistant.Macros.WaitForTargetAction|30
Assistant.Macros.AbsoluteTargetAction|0|0|28382|4531|1381|23|400
Assistant.Macros.SpeechAction|0|52|3|ENU|2|16|7|guards
Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:10
Assistant.Macros.EndForAction
Assistant.Macros.DoubleClickTypeAction|3763|True
Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:10
To summarize, the macro loops continuously and starts with a for-loop. In the for-loop, I begin by using the provocation skill, and targeting the dire wolf first, and then myself. Call the guards, and pause 10 seconds (skill refresh timer). Repeat 6 iterations of the loop, and then use an instrument of type lute, and pause for 10 seconds.

I just stack 10 lutes in my inventory and let it go - the reason I only do 6 iterations in the for-loop is because if you use a large number like 100 and the instrument breaks on the first iteration... well, you have a long delay ahead of you. I'm absolutely positive there's an easier way to do it without the for-loop (like using an if conditional and a system message), but I'm still learning the Razor stuff :?

I don't think this is any easier, but I believe it is more efficient.

Code: Select all

!Loop
Assistant.Macros.UseSkillAction|22
Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:00.5000000
Assistant.Macros.IfAction|4|0|what
Assistant.Macros.WaitForTargetAction|1
Assistant.Macros.TargetTypeAction|False|3742
Assistant.Macros.ElseAction
Assistant.Macros.WaitForTargetAction|1
Assistant.Macros.AbsoluteTargetAction|0|0|59477|4511|1390|23|221
Assistant.Macros.WaitForTargetAction|1
Assistant.Macros.HotKeyAction|1059|
Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:00.5000000
Assistant.Macros.IfAction|4|0|your music succeeds
Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:10.1000000
Assistant.Macros.SpeechAction|0|52|3|ENU|2|16|7|guards
Assistant.Macros.ElseAction
Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:05
Assistant.Macros.SpeechAction|0|52|3|ENU|2|16|7|guards
This macro works best on a solitary trapped animal, like those at the Moonglow zoo. What this macro has that the other does not is 2 separate timers for either a fail or success. You see, if you fail you have a shorter timer before you can use Provoke. I also added a check for when your instrument breaks it will select another. This checks every iteration meaning that this is a much more streamlined version then the above.

I'd suggest to everyone that you macro your music to 90's before training Provoke.

Easiest macro to GM Music and Provo in Razor -

Double Click Type (instrument)
Pause - 500ms
UseSkill (provocation)
WaitForTarget
AbsoluteTarget (first creature to provoke)
WaitForTarget
AbsoluteTarget (second creature to provoke)
Pause - 11000ms

-Loop

Easily executed in the stables in Britain.

One quick change...

For Loop 20
Double Click Type (instrument)
Pause - 500ms
End For Loop
UseSkill (provocation)
WaitForTarget
AbsoluteTarget (first creature to provoke)
WaitForTarget
AbsoluteTarget (second creature to provoke)
Pause - 1000ms

Instead of sitting idle for 11 seconds, this will use the instrument over and over until your skill delay has worn off
