Just make sure you switch your smithing at the correct skill levels. Also smelt everything you make... I don't know whether keeping yourself full helps, but it certainly couldn't hurt. This topic has been contentious; honestly, I'm not sure myself!

I never did it with any frequency in smithing to get a decent sample size. I do make a ton of EV scrolls though. I did 2 batches of 200 attempts at “quite full” and “extremely hungry”
Batch 1 – Quite full : scrolls made 108 out of 200 Batch 1 –Extremely hungry: Scrolls made 98 out of 200
Batch 2 – Quite full: scrolls made 104 out of 200 Batch 2 – Extremely hungry: scrolls made 94 out of 200
So 212 on full, and 192 on empty or about a 10% increase in success rate. The weird thing was in both batches I was exactly 10 scrolls different. You can probably assume a 5% error rate so gains from eating would likely be about 5% if you want to be conservative. I couldn’t be sure I was always in the range of quite full, but I should have been pretty close most of the time. I tended to eat a bit early, so there was a significant amount of time in the “stuffed” range.
It’s enough I usually eat before starting a batch but don’t worry about feeding throughout. If I don’t have any fish steaks on my scribe, I don’t worry about grabbing any, etc. It is such a small gain I wouldn’t worry too much about it. It doesn’t hurt to eat, since meat and fish is easy to come by. There’s no harm in it. I certainly wouldn’t buy food to keep in range.

Just GM'd using this approach. I didn't keep count on ingots but it seems accurate still. Roser's vendor at the Occlo bank had a nice supply of ingots to spare me the trouble of mining for all me ingots. Budner wrote: ...
Note: all references to skill level are REAL skill level.
I made daggers from 31 to 35, since they were the only available weapon at that skill level. From 35-65, I made cutlasses From 65-85, I made short spears From 85-98.9, I made regular spears From 99-100, I made breast plate (plate tunic)
Here is the data on ingots used while leveling:
31-50 required 4,267 ingots (daggers and cutlasses) 50.1-60 required 2,520 ingots (cutlasses) 60.1-70 required 2,845 ingots (cutlasses and short spears) 70.1-80 required 3,429 ingots (short spears) 80.1-90 required 4,936 ingots (short spears and regular spears) 90.1-98.9 required 5,536 ingots (regular spears) 99.0-GM required 4,012 ingots (breast plate/tunic)
Total ingots from 31-GM 27,545 Total ingots from 50-GM 23,278
...
