I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I didn't pick up on this immediately when I started playing:
Do not waste your time melee fighting monsters that have macing weapons. Some of them (Ettins for example) do carry a decent amount of gold, however you will lose that extra gold in time spent repairing/replacing your armor. Seek out the Ettins that aren't carrying hammers. Don't bother with Orcs or Rat Men carrying clubs, or with Ogres at all. Trolls carry an okay amount of gold, but the Trolls carrying axes will wear you out quick too.
