In my understanding, any pet in follow mode is supposed to have its stamina constantly refreshed. I'll just explain the steps to recreate my problem.
1. Tame a nightmare
2. Friend that nightmare to an alternate character from your tamer
3. Tell the nightmare to follow your alternate character, using your tamer
4. Once the nightmare is successfully in follow mode, run it dry on stamina, hop off and hop back on. The nightmare's stamina is not refreshed.
