Trying to steal equipped weapon and becoming gray

It seems that trying to steal an equipped weapon makes one gray to the target. But when the target attacks you back, he will still be blue to you. Earlier i thought that when you become gray to someone and he attacks you, he will also become freely attackable for you?

As a thief when you steal something from someone or attempt to you become perma grey to them. They can freely attack you and as a thief you are not allowed to attack them back within the first 2 minutes.

Example1: You steal from someone and they attack you right away. They will be blue to you which means if you kill them they can give you a murder count.

Example2: You steal from someone and run away and hide. You come back 2 minutes later. They attack you as you are perma grey to them, but this time they are now grey to you and you can freely kill them without taking a murder count and getting suspended from the thieves guild.

Once upon a time you could steal from others pretty well with 30.0 stealing... and they became attackable if they attacked you... and it was one of the ultimate ways to bait and kill people with no consequence. Ahh the good old days. That was on OSI in like 1997 or 1998 (before T2A), though.
