Reputation system for forums

Post by Derrick »

I've installed a much needed reputation system for the forums. You'll notice thumbs up and thumbs down icons next to each post in a thread.

There are some limitations on how often you can "karma" people, and how much you can give.
I'm still learning about it myself, there has been some info on how it works added to the Forum FAQ: faq.php#f11r0

It's been necessary to hand-merge the code into our site template, and I'm not quite done yet, but if you see any interface pages that are especially ugly, please let me know.

Feedback on the overall system is welcome as well. Thanks!

PS: Grats to nightshark for getting the first thumbs up:

It looks like you got hammered with bad karma all of a sudden, and if you have negative karma you don't get to vote, however I see it's already creeping back up :)

There is also a limit to how much you can give based on your forum activity, karma, and how often you have given it. This thing isn't very well documented, I'm still figuring it out too.

How will negative karma affect buyers and sellers of items, if someone makes 10 new accounts and lowers my karma will no one buy from me in trade forums?

We'll have to see how it's used or abused. I expect the overall impact to be positive. There are limitations on just being able to make an account and karma people I think. I'd appreciate confirmation of this though.

What is this, Facebook?

Going to edit this in: I've seen a lot of forums with "reputation" or "karma" systems, and they get abused by people. I can already see we've got people trolling the karma function as if it's some kind of little meta game.

You can turn it off in your User Control Panel
