I've had Balrons break aggro after I provoked them but never failed

Daemons and Balrons break aggro because they target innocent if they move or get to close. The only way to avoid this is teleporting around them while theyre aggro'd.

I never even thought about Teleport (thanks for the info), mostly because I've never cared enough ... the other provoked mob will draw 'the truant' back soon enough, if the character remains unengaged.

However: good call, and I would never have thought to mention this; if hits<50, don't invite the Balron's Flamestrike by doing a 'victory dance' around him; if you need to move (thanks to Skrap), teleport.
