Unfortunately, I've been subject to these phony spellbooks as well. Lost around 10k on em. I guess I've been away from UO too long to remember all the lames that came along to try and ruin the enjoyable parts of the game. It's just how it goes I guess.

Park a ghost there thats named 'scam vendor'.

Thats how we dealt with riff raff on other servers.

But you have to waste an account to do it..... :P

Or use tamed animals... But again it takes work!

The scam vendors have always been one of the things that truly troubled me on this shard. They very rarely trick a veteran player, and even if they did it would be chump change to them.

Scam Vendors have always hurt the new players and do nothing to encourage them to stick around. Its one of those allowed things that just hurts the shard, as a whole, for a cheap laugh and a quick buck.

Like I was saying before, a proactive solution would be to buy those properties from their current owners and replace them with legit vendors. Scams over and you've got a prime vendor location to make back your investment.

There are LOTS of things that hurt the newer players. Scam vendors are a drop in the bucket compared to other issues.

I think they are lame and petty, and I'd never open a scam vendor (I haven't had a vendor home since I played back on Lake Superior) but they are as much of part of the community as:
befriending backstabbers
gank squads
los house killers
stable hoarding
etc...etc...etc

Vendor scamming is probably one of the more petty yet, less frustrating problems facing new players.
