Linking People to your UOAM in UOSA

It seems pretty simple to do- Start a server and have whoever use the IP info and port to link to your server.
I tried that with my girlfriend, but it wouldn't work. Kept saying the server was unavailable. She's in the Philippines and I'm in Texas? Could that be the problem?

So...everyone just connects to that server? Think I got it...
Edit: Or not... I keep getting an error. Is there anything I have to do other than just click connect to server?

if you enter a password it basically makes a private channel for anyone that uses that password
