Or do you have to be a hybrid these days?

Solo? Hybrid.

In a group setting pure tanks are handy.

By "pure tank", I assume you mean "pure mage" - a mage without weapon skill.

For PvP purposes they are essentially worthless.

pure tank being a mage with wep skill- tank mage... Tank wouldn't mean no weapon skill- anyhow. Yes tank mages are still worth it. Hybrid is meh and the survivability of a tank mage vs multiple targets far beats any other splice. Tank mages also able to deliver the best combo's I've seen.

tank mage: not required to have super gear to be good.
hybrid: required to have super gear to be good.
dexer: gear only effects wt. of your corpse.

Like I said before the blitzmage champion wrestler, a tactics anatomy 5X mage with higher dex talking 100/55/70 just using primarily 4th circle and under to interrupt can be a headache while bloodying their nose with punches so the rest of the guys can focus on their combos is not a bad choice at all.
Having your hands free at all times without fumbling with a weapon allows you to use potions and release precast spells more precisely.
It doesn't have the damage of a hally tank...it's purpose is something entirely different.

Buffed up to 120 strength 75 dex can do more damage and swing faster then what you may think as long as your opponent has only clothing for protection.

I was wondering more for PVM purposes. I was wondering about taking on higher mobs like balrons and dragons and the like. Was wondering if a pure tank would survive.

Any GM Mage with high INT can farm the highest end monsters. Paralyse + EV and you're good. No need to be tank, bard or beggar.

I should clarify what i mean by "tank". I meant a straight up fighter....macer, swords or polearm. Can they handle themselves against the higher end mobs?

Ah, a warrior.

It is possible, but not practical, plus you need to have top of the line gear. I mean like Full Invuln suits, +25 vanqs, reflect jewelry...the works.

The highest end mobs I'll hunt on my dexxer are deamons and lichlords (with silver weps), Dragons, Balrons, Wyrms, and many other mobs including ophidian avengers and knight errants are simply not worth it.

Put poisoning on the build up to GM and choose a bladed weapon style and you can.
My very first character ever here was a poison swords dexxer.

I literally manually got my poisoning up to 70 back then, and I did this without even knowing how to make cloth or bandages  I killed a lot of thieves with that one

My first kill here was with my miner blacksmith who became so when someone told me to take my dexxer and mine for strength lol

So like this thief came up to me with like a hundred potions lol and thought he could kill me...this was before the flagging system changed and thieves ran the shard

Sorry...

Yeah put poisoning on him and you'll rock it, as long as you have an alchemist you are brewing
