While I can't even gate, and therefore don't abuse it, I find it a very interesting concept that adds a whole new level to the game.

Discussions are only healthy when two sides refute each other.
You shouldn't feel "pwned" for refuting potential inaccuracies.
I think part of why this shard is great, is the amount of dedication of the player population trying to reach a common goal of era accuracy.

*apologies for being slightly off-topic*

Well, I don't think that's what makes this shard great!! :P

It shows that gating monsters was accurate into mid Nov 99 at least, funny there is no mention of the entice skill. Tameable were continued to allow to gate otherwise tamers would have to go everywhere by foot when they were tamed. So you could entice herd provoke or otherwise gate a tameable creature but not an untameable one even after the patch.
Being so late it was implemented it is under debate because these late patches have been cited by many (some who have even posted in this thread) as being pre-cursors to UO:R and setting the stage for it. So by implementing these patches to bring everything into balance you'd have to start trickling in aspects of UO:R.
If you want a link to proof gating monsters was possible and the patch came in mid Novemeber-Dec look at the other post in this forum How gating monsters was accurate and read all the link both from 98 and 99.

Based on one of the posts linked by Trellor, it seems non-tamable creatures were indeed gated.
Usenet Poster Palehorse wrote:Gating monsters doesnt only affect the newbies. i am a seasoned warrior and

Tamable snakes are those named "a snake" and are very small/thin. None of the "giant snakes" (giant serpents, silver serpents, etc) are tamables AFAIK.

Furthermore, gating monsters and hiding is what particularly interested me. Current UOSA mechanics seem to retain gated monsters out of their spawn locations so as long as a player character is within the target range. The above-quoted post seem to suggest that this mechanic is indeed era accurate.

Esteban

I mentioned this in the other thread and I will mention it here. All the posts in Trellor's link are from the exact same time, Nov 11 1999, 1:00 am. One of the posts also mentions the "Rep patch" and the only patch I know of refered to that is the one from June 1998. Seem odd to anyone else?

How do we know the dates are right then? Because it really seems like they are refering to Summer of '98 since they are talking about the the Rep patch that just went in.

The dates seem to be 100% correct on every other post..if you go through the timeline of the group, all post descriptions and experiences are right on point.

Here's a list of threads supposedly from "Nov. 11 1999" http://groups.google.com/groups/profile ... bHsRJ4DB3A.

In one of those threads there is a post that says this:

I used to gate monsters into the cemetery north of Britain. Everyone
loved it, especially the newbies. This was back before the rep patch
and it was often the only way they could get to fight monsters without
worrying about pks. Gating a Hythloth orc spawn in was great fun
(though extremely dangerous, which is why I gave it up...died too
often.)
That places the posts right after the Rep patch was put in, right before gating was taken out.

That post is in the same thread, I don't think he is quoting a post from a year and a half before he made his.

So it's more likely that the only posts that have messed up dates are the ones referring to the very item you're trying to change?
