Does detect hiding also reveal the hidden or just tell where and if there is a hidden player?

I was lockpicking the other day in the Ancient Wyrn area. I unlocked the chest while hidden, stealth away to blow it up, and suddenly was attacked and killed. Question is: How was I unhidden, attacker flagged grey, but wasn't given option to give a count? He was blue before attack. His hally was out...
