yeah that's the thing about the English language. There's no standard for spelling/pronunciation.

womb, comb, bomb... all have different sounds but still spelled similarly.

"R-E-A-D" and "L-E-A-D" can be pronounced with long or short "E" sound.

This is why the English languages is so damn hard. There's no consistency.

So, I really wouldn't be surprised if "Lich" sounds different then how I say it. It's not a common enough word to hear it all the time in general conversation. I always assumed it was an "itch" sound.

I have heard so many different versions of words pronounced in this game it's crazy...

Ocllo - Ock-lo, O-Cell-o, Os-low
Hythloth - Hith-loth, Hi-loth, Hi-th-loth
Ogre - Org <-- Have no idea why some people call them this.
Destard - Deh-stard, Des-tard, Dee-stard, Des-terd

There is no doubt that I am missing many others that I am just not remembering.

Lich with the chh-sound I believe is a bastardized way of saying it though the "chh pronounciation is there". I believe it to actually have been pronounced in the old days as "Leech" and being spelled liche. It meant nothing of an undead being at all but did consititure a sorcerer/healer who actually did use leeches in their arts of healing.

The dictionary use is obsolete as this term is quite old and used differently then it had then as no ones profession is to be a Liche. But you could say alot of doctors are leeches still without incident.

this is so true. The couple guys i worked with in 99 who got me into UO all said Lick and Licks and Lick Lords... So for 10 years i have said it that way... Here comes vent and UOSA and every one is like "WTF is a lick?"

People forget (or many didnt get to experience) what games were like with typing in either game or icq as 99% of the communication... I have never known a voice game until UOSA with vent as I didnt go to another mmorpg from uo and things like socom and ea sports titles are all trash talk!

Its a pretty interesting thing to see.

Well in some cases. Even spelling of established words can disputed.

To this day, I still don't know where "Aerith" in Final Fantasy VII comes from...

I'll play.

Reagent. A surprising number of people think the "a" is silent pronouncing it "re-gent" rather than "re-a-gent"
