The smithing skill level required to use coloured ingots is the same as the mining skill level needed to mine the ores -

Ore & Ingots Minimum Skill
Iron -
Dull Copper 65
Shadow 70
Copper 75
Bronze 80
Golden 85
Agapite 90
Verite 95
Valorite 99

Mikel,

Which part of the guide did you use?

Katana/gorgets or Cutlas/Kryss/ShortSpear/LongSpear/plate gloves etc.

I'm still unsure which path to go.

I decided to record the ingot consumption and path I took to GM smithing in the past 24 hours.

My character started with 50 smithing, so had 55 shown smithing when I started. I consistently remained well fed, I made my own smith tools so my ingot counts are a little off here and there and rounded at times. Not a big deal since no one will get the same results off the exact quantity of ingots. I was a GM miner and smelted every single thing I made.

55-65 Cutlass - 4.2k Ingots - the gain on cutlass seemed sort of meh, but it worked.
65-75 Kryss - 4.8k Ingots - Kryss were great gains, I would probably switch to them before 65, and stay with them a little after 75.
75-85 Short Spear - 5.4k Ingots - Good gains, at this point I was like wow, 15k ingots to 85? This isn't so bad.
85-93 Spear - 8.85k Ingot - I would be interested to see if these would have been good gains past 93, because the next phase sucked.
93-99 Plate Gloves - 16.6k Ingot - This phase sucked, but then again, a lot of skills suck in the 90s.
99-100 Plate Chest - 4k Ingots - The skill points moved pretty fast at least, and I'm done!

Total Ingots used, about 44k.

I did long spears until about 95-96, seemed to work very well, I think. gains were about .1 every 100 ignots with smelting at ~80 mining. decided to move onto gloves but i would also be interested if spears could go even further

If it's worth it to anyone - I just did a run from 91 to 95.2. I did spears until 93 and switched to plate gloves. I jumped to 95.2 quite quickly and they seemed to smelt ok too. I'm at GM mining as well. I'd say this run cost be about 4.5k ingots... A rate I'm ok with.

55-65 Cutlass
65-75 Kryss
75-85 Short Spear
85-99 Spear
99-100 Brest Plate

I can verify the Regular Spear will get you to 99 skill!

I started my character with 50 Blacksmith and it took around 20k in iron to go from 50 to GM.

The trick is as many know to smelt everything you make and make sure your mining is GM so you get the best percentage of ingots back per smelt. The reason it does not take as many ingots as other ways is that every time you smelt a spear you get 100% of your iron back so the only way you lose iron is if you fail to make the item. Once I got in the Mid 90's I recall going for over 4 hours with the same 2k of iron. Just make sure you have a ton of smithing tools.

Remember don't give up you will hit 99 this way just stick through it and you will save time/money/resources.
As it was noted before it takes 3k to 4k in iron to GM from 99.

Wow, I'd say you did very well on conserving your ingots! I started at 50 smithing/49 poisoning. I worked it up to GM mining from 30ish skill trained and pretty much did the Cutlass to 65, kryss to 75, short spear to around 84 and then long spears to the aforementioned like 93ish I think it was (why didn't I write this down?) I estimate that I've gone through at least 30k ingots. @ 6g per ingot, that is an easy value of over 180k gold. Jees, that's staggering. Nice work on the economics of it.

Maybe I'll switch back to long spears on my next run.

Ok so I switched back to long spears at 97 skill. Smelted every single one and the economy of the ingots skyrocketed. It certainly takes a long time to get to 99 using spears but the amount of ingots you save during the process is astounding. I rode that train all the way to 99 and promptly switch to breast plates. It took me about 2.5k ingots to go from 99 to 100 but I can finally say I have a GM smith. If economy is your aim, I would definitely use the long spears to get there with GM mining.

Thanks Rigor for mentioning it does take a bit of time to go the Long Spear way but it works and saves you a ton of iron. I figured people would have trouble believing me since I didn't come close to using the same amount of iron as most people did. Thanks for verifying it for me. I hope people now will give my method a shot and remember you will gain just takes some time.

Just gonna confirm the long spear theory :)

I did in fact keep a detailed log to the ingot of how many I used and on what but my PC blew up around the early 90s and I've been on my old PC since and stopped keeping the log. However I'm at 96 now and been using long spears for most of the 90s that I can remember, the ingot economy is amazing once you get to the mid 90s. I have 98 mining and appear to get 100% of the ingots back every smelt and have been since I bothered to check when I was at 96 mining. Maybe somebody can confirm.

Will post the log when I rebuild my PC, waiting on the parts at the moment but the hdd should be intact. Will be useful for 50-90 for people anyway.

But shorly this would mean you would only need 100 ingots to level bs??

I mean make items out of 100 ingots, smelt them, get 100 ingots back, onto the next 100??

No because when you fail you lose some ingots and it's impossible to skill up unless there is a chance of failure iirc. However it does significantly reduce the amount of ingots wasted. I'm sure this would apply to a few other items at certain skill levels but I have no idea what the min/max level required for any specific item is. But say making a cutlas was 70 max skill you could prolly do the last part of the 60s with this method at a slower rate but much more efficiently. Dunno if anybody can confirm this.

Anyway, made it from 90 to 99 with far less ingots than I did 80-90 in the end thanks to that tactic... so yeah! I recommend it!

Edit: To finish it took me about 3k ingots from 99.0 to 100. Will post my incomplete ingot use log soon!

Also finally can confirm 99-100 raised very quickly (relative to the long spears) and got me to 100 in about 3kish ingots.

At 72 mining I still get 100% ingots back smelting spears. Just FYI

I have no idea how people are GMing this so easy. I made a new character for tradeskills and had 40k ingots banked to GM Blacksmithing. After following this and other guides out there, I'm still only at 64.5 skill level and my ingots are long gone. I just spent another 10k ingots today after farming them for a measly 5 skill (or less) gain. Must have over 60k ingots spent total. Can't see it getting any easier. Lacking motivation to even continue at this rate.
