DLed Client; messing with Windows Explorer?

Post by SuPaH »

Hey guys,

I DLed the client on my laptop earlier this afternoon and had it freeze during installation. I tried to restart it but the icon on the desktop and the file seem to continue to lock up my computer. I've tried to delete the file, no luck. Tried to move it to the Recycle Bin, no luck. Is there any reason why it would be bogging down my system? It's almost as if it's in an infinite loop even when I haven't tried to run it.

I DLed the client on the main page btw.

Thanks for the help.

I've tried restarting it multiple times, including a start up, wait 10 minutes without doing anything at all, and then shutting it down. Still nothing working.

It's just a Dell Inspiron 1720, running Windows Vista. I don't have any special spyware or virus blocker, just the University's one. I've played Second Age on this computer before about 6 months ago, but uninstalled it with the belief that I wouldn't play it again.

Everything else on my computer is working as long as I don't hit the icon. which immediately sets it into the loop of loading that ends with a "Windows Explorer has stop responding" message and freezes it up. It is also taking a ridiculous amount of time to "log off" when I try to shut down or restart my computer.

Hope that helps. I am at a complete loss.

Just to be on safe side (seeing I'm not understanding your problem).. do this ..

Hold power button until you hear laptop shut down ... then hit power button again to start a cold boot .. at this time once past BIOS when windows first starts to load hold the f8 key to trigger windows alt start up and start up in safemode. (it will take windows longer to load) once loaded, right click once on problematic icon and then press shift and delete .. ( this will delete installer program .. )

Once that is done check to make sure there are no old traces of old install by check control panel programs list and in the files system itself but looking for UO type folders ..

How shut down and restart computer as normal..

Then use this link to installer to download .. (I'm currently doing this myself to make sure it works fine as is for me)

Alright thanks for the heads up on safemode to get rid of the old file. Restarted and it seemed to be running better. For some reason, after I DLed it the first time my CPU usage was off the charts non-stop...including Windows Explorer and Desktop Window Manager. Trying to reDL now...using IE instead of Firefox this time too to see if it changes anything.

Will post with the results. Thanks so much for the help Chaos.

The DL froze at 99% and isn't finishing. Think I should try a torrent DL?

Wondering if it has to do with Vista permissions .. However seeing I've never had a computer that will run Vista I'm not sure how to tell you to proceed other then cruise the support forum for Vista permission issues.

Can you get on IRC??

Not really sure what the exact fix was. Made sure to turn off my firewall and AV before the DL. Also used Dagon's client download at the following URL instead of the one directly from the Enter Britannia tab on the main site. Also made sure to run as Admin.
