Developing The Roleplaying Community

Post by Unlimited Bladeworks »

This thread topic's purpose is to allow everyone interested in roleplaying to participate in a designated thread.

RP guilds currently active should leave their guild information in the RP Roll Call thread topic.

My thoughts in regards to roleplaying is that most people judge how good the role-play on a shard is by seeking out what we used to call "Spontaneous Role-play." Basically this means just wandering around an area with your character, bumping into some other characters and acting out a situation there and then, whether it be friendly banter, a taxing situation, a robbery, anything.

But since there aren't that many role-players on UO:T2A in the first place, and all the role-player's schedules exist in different timezones, the chances of spontaneous role-play are really slim. There are no "peak times" for everyone.

Some would argue that this could be combated by organizing a role-playing event. The issue with that is, any mass-announcement of a role-playing event is going to reach the wrong ears, and it's undoubtedly going to be gatecrashed by unwelcome visitors.

Another issue is some role-players have been around since pre-ren on OSI shards, and as such can understand the issue with role-play and outside interference, and can overcome it as they're used to it. In fact, this adds to their enjoyment. Most players, on the other hand, have never had to deal with such a situation, having done all their role-play in the safety of non-RP characters in Trammel. This is not an attack against Trammel-only role-players, it's just they are more likely to get frustrated.

Having said that, if you build a good role-play group within your own guild, then it will grow. Eventually someone will want to offer the same as your guild, but slightly different, and because of the interaction they will have with your guild, that guild will grow too. And so on and so forth until you build a role-playing community.

If you build it, they will come.

Before you bash roleplaying....

Remember, what is good for the RP community is good for the UO:T2A community as a whole. More players means more people to interact with, more buyers and sellers of goods and services, more to trade commerce/other economic decisions in-game and over IRC, and more victims for PK's to thrive on. :P

So share your thoughts...
