Dexterity based characters have to buy weapons, armor and shields. Often. They use bandages, potions and magic jewelery a lot more too...They're much more expensive in the long run. Magery is so freaking easy and cheap to GM...
Is somebody willing to give a newbie some PVP lessons on test? I've run right next to people for 10 seconds straight and never hit them "on the run" so I don't know what Faust is talking about.
As for dexxers just sucking here, as a lot of people seem to be asserting, I have a huge suggestion for you:
1. Go to Razor
2. Click the Macros tab
3. Click New
4. Type "Greater Explosion Potion"
5. Click Record
6. Double click a "Greater Explosion Potion"
7. Click Stop
8. Go to Hotkeys
9. Go to Targets
10. Click on "Last Target" and set it to a Hotkey
@ .5 seconds (give or take a few milliseconds depending on your latency, it's something you have to work with), click on your "Last Target" hotkey.
You have now been educated as to how dexterity based characters work.

A swing cannot advance during movement marm... However, if you are in your swinging state you can hit during movement even after taking chase for several screens. There are many instances that allow a swing to advance during movement like turns, lag, hitting obstacles, etc... there are many situations that make you stop for a quarter of a second to advance your swing.

I also find it strange that someone would consider it swinging on the run when to perform it you have to stop running. I certainly don't consider this "swinging on the run", but I guess it depends on how you define it. I would define swinging on the run being able to chase, my swing timer readies, and I swing, without having to stop running, thus swinging on the run. The current system, like the previous combat system, requires you to pause to get your weapon into ready swing, after staying stationary long enough your swing is readied and you can try and get next to your target to swing.
Trying to get next to a target when you have to pause after every swing, is a ridiculously dumb concept, imo, and one of the only reasons I didn't trash my melee character immediately upon joining the server was because melee was "being fixed" when I joined from it's previously gimped state. I'd still consider it broken personally, not to mention that now there's occasional double hally hits/bardi hits, hell I even did a double swing with my war axe randomly, not that I know how, nor think that any weapon should randomly double swing.
Like Faust says, if you lag you can possibly get to your next swing since your technically not moving for that lag spike, but seriously, who the hell plays on a 56k modem here. Fights in games have advanced far from what they were back in the actual T2A days, so the logic that your swing might be "readied" because you were standing still from lag is non-existent today, and your opponents certainly aren't lagging either.

but for players like me looking mainly for fair pvp, we're at a loss.
i disagree with just about everything you said.. you even got me by surprise by supporting the events .. i thought we might agree there. sorry i think you missed the point of the server completely.

Try reading the responses Grom.

I read it just fine, not sure what your trying to prove. In otherwords, you need to stop to ready your swing. If we travel back in time to the land of 56k modems, lag spikes could equate to standing still long enough, but people don't lag nowadays. If you are suggesting that dexers start acting like clumsy oafs and run into trees or spin in circles, not only would you be looking like an uncoordinated buffoon, but the result is the same, your standing still to refresh your swing timer. In otherwords, you can't swing on the run, you have to stop running and refresh your swing, or, like you put it, be a completely uncoordinated noob and run into stuff or spin in circles to equally stand still long enough, same thing.

Are you trying to tell me a quarter of a second is a long time?

standing still to swing is not the same as swinging on the run. the period of time you have to stay still for is irrelevant.

Swinging on the run is being able to hit when you run next to someone without stopping. This is very much possible to do with the current swing timer. However, this can only happen if your swing is primed and ready to swing. If the swing isn't primed/ready you have to stop for a quarter of a second to allow it to advance. A swing can be primed during chase without the requirement of stopping but this isn't always the case since it depends on the current situation in combat.
If you or anyone here is asking if you can 'swing on the run no matter what happens' my answer would most certainly be different.
You can swing/tag someone with a weapon on the run here though...

I trust that you have actually tested this out for yourself, Faust?
Bottom Line: If someone is running from you, and does not stop, and you are running right next to them, you will NOT swing your weapon. YOU HAVE TO STOP TO SWING YOUR WEAPON. That is the bottom line, and you yourself have already said this, so I don't know why you are arguing with yourself.
And nightshark if you are dying to dexers it's because the melee damage is retarded out of whack right now.
I 2 hit killed a fully loaded dexer with my heavy cross bow the other day. That guy must have been like "Well this is gay."

Do you think that I haven't tested it?
I know what the code pretty much looks like.. so it's quite apparent what can and cannot happen to me. Again, you have to stop to advance your swing but that doesn't mean you CANNOT SWING AND RUN in game. I did not once try to argue that you could run and swing forever without stopping. When people use the term 'run and swing' when saying it's not possible, that is a flat out lie since it's very much possible. However, it is not possible to run forever and swing without ever stopping. You have to stop for a brief 0.25s to advance the swing if it's not primed and ready. Once the swing advances it can be locked in the current state to allow you to swing immediately when you get next to your combatant even to 'run and swing' if you wanted too.
There is talk of this feature possibly being removed though.

It's also an important consideration that even when it looks like you are running next to someone, if you looked at their screen you would see it's not always the case. Your client shows you where you have told the server you want to be, their client shows where you were last time there was an update, and somewhere in between is where you both really are; this is of course more pronounced when running fast such as on a mount. Only a third party can see where two other players are relative to each other at a point in time. This is the nature of the UO client and latency.
