Re: LockPicking
Question on this: What message do you get when you are attempting to open a lock within your skill level but fail? Also what message when you are attempting to open a lock outside of your skill range?
Re: LockPicking
Fail: You are unable to pick the lock.
Can't pick: You have no idea how to manipulate the lock.

Re: LockPicking
i cant make lockpicks w tinkering...i have 51 tink...they dont show in my gump...im reinstalling the client and going to try and upgrade to what uosa recomends...i too am trying to build a treasure hunter. i just discovered this shard today.
Re: LockPicking
I used the 4 box method. Mainly because I squeezed another skill gain in there on a 10 second interval between the boxes. ':-)
I made 4 boxes with 50 tinker skill. I started at 50 Lockpick and used exactly 116 lockpicks to cap at 72.3 skill REAL. or 76.3 skill adjusted.
I started with 10 dex and stopped at 59 dex.
I ran the macro for 9 hrs while at work. I got 0 gains and broke 0 lockpicks. So thats definatly the skill gain cap for lockpick with 50 tinker boxes with 59 dex.
NOw i gotta find a gm box or 4 to get it to 95.

Re: LockPicking
ok, I found 3 gm tinker boxes. Pre traped. What a lot of fun it was getting those open.
8 hrs of macroing and 326 lockpicks later I hit 95 skill.
So j ust under 450 lockpicks for me, and a total of about 20 hrs of macroing. I'm pretty happy about that.

Re: LockPicking
I may be late to the party here, but just an FYI, you only need one box. Multiple boxes doesn't help skill gain (or, I should say, just one box doesn't hurt it).
Re: LockPicking
Yeah, I coulda used one box.
And I actually started with one box but I couldn't get over my mental handicap that you couldn't continue to get gains on the same item. I couldn't bear the thought of 10 hrs at work and my char not gaining cause I wouldn't buy 3 more boxes.
But regardless, personally I'm not the best macro maker. The whole if, else, end if, system message this crap is still beyond me atm. So with the half second intervals between targets and the 3.5 seconds pauses for picking afforded me an opportunity to plug in a skill check for detect hidden. So I wasn't really losing any time by picking multiple boxes, I gained just as fast as if I was just picking one box all day.
I will admit my macro timing for the skill gain wasn't the most efficient. It was like only one skill check per 16 or 17 seconds. I trimmed that up a bit when I used 3 GM tinker boxes to about one skill check every 12 seconds. It wasn't my main concern, just a nice added bonus and regardless of how sloppy my macro was, it was still more efficient than looping the skill gain on one box, and only gaining in one skill all day. I got detect hidden up to the mid 80's by the time I hit 95 picking.

Re: LockPicking
I bought to 30LP
30-70 or so I used a 40tink/40 carp box (dunno if the carp makes a diff).
This gives you plenty of time to leave your macro running and switch to a 50/50 box at any time, when you come back to the keyboard.
70-76 50/50 (caps at 76, and you also need exactly 76 to unlock a GM tinked box)
76-95 GM made
I have 2 chars with LPing since one of them is just a no skilled char I am using to unlock level 5 tmap chests (with gm detect), until my LPing skill is high enough on my cart to delete my other LPer

Re: LockPicking
I've been trying all day to get a .1 in lockpicking.
I have a 50/50 box and lockpicks Im creating with a thinker character (84 tinkering at the moment).
I cant pick a gm box yet and the 50/50 doesnt raise my skill.
What am I doing wrong?

50/50 box will take you to this level, if you are not gaining, check you have available skill points (if you are at the skill cap)
If you have available skill points, you may have somehow mixed up your boxes (this happened to me), I'd suggest making a new 50/50 box just to be sure. I somehow got stuck at 75.9 o_o. I made a 50/50 box and gained on the first attempt.

I chequed what you mentioned.
-Skill Cap
-Mixed Box (Created a new 50/50 char)
Left the macro over the night and nothing. No .1 and no broken picks.
I got a question now. The lockpicks has to be GM or it works with the one Im making (non-gm)?

Re: LockPicking
I am a little confused by your post. The lockpicks don't matter. You said you made a 50/50 box but then you said your tinker skill is 84? which is it a 50 tinkered box or a 84 tinkered box?

Re: LockPicking
Pretty sure the skill level of the lockpicks have absolutely no bearing. What you COULD do is macro your dex up until it pushes your real skill over 76, that would allow you to start on GM made boxes, and then lower your dex again. That'd probably be the easiest thing for you to do given your probs.
And wow I just started training lockpicking from 95-GM yesterday, and I've gotta say it's really bad. I spent over an hour picking lv4 chests and gained .2 skill (now 95.2). The thing that makes it really lame is the crap you get in the lv4 chests. Weapons don't seem to go over +10/might and 90% of the magic clothing/bracelets, etc are either "night eyes" or debuff. The other 10% are all strength/cunning/agility.
So unless you really value the 60 skill points you'd have to spend on detect, GMing LPing is completely pointless as you don't really get any good items on the road to GM LPing >< Though I did get a deer mask, which I love

Yeah, GMing LP is one of the most ardous thing to do. I went twice around all the lvl4 chests in the "old" lands, and only gained .2. Did get 2 t-maps, a skirt of invis with 30+ charges and a teleport ring. Other than that, utter crap.
