This isn't the eighties, Mens. Being a geek no longer relegates one to the social fringes. Now, being an idiot on the other hand...

Indeed, we have internet. We have social networking technologies. I'm sure any competent aviation risk assessment expert wouldn't avoid flying. But, perhaps, they might be more aware of such risks and for instance book a statistically safe seat. Why take a bus when a flight is so much better.

Apart from what The Big Bang Theory has brought into the mainstream, the reality of such types of people is far different from the "Hollywood" rendition.

If I was an idiot I would be right at home in the USA:

Of course not. Everyone knows that flying is statistically safer than driving.
And to follow your inference through to it's conclusion: Who said I don't use Facebook or Twitter?

So you're comfortable in making the generalization that anyone who knows a thing or two about computers or network security are socially retarded and hideously deformed?
That's a staggeringly insightful piece of journalistic genius. Convicted criminals and the tragically poor are statistically less literate than the remainder of the population.
Someone get this blogger a Pulitzer.

Depending on what statistics you consider. If you have a mechanical breakdown in a vehicle, regardless of how many individual journeys you take, you are much less likely than if you were in an aircraft suffering a mechanical breakdown.
Malaikat wrote:And to follow your inference through to it's conclusion: Who said I don't use Facebook or Twitter?
Well if you had posted articles saying that women unattractive then I could reasonably come to a conclusion that you don't find them attractive, and if you don't find them attractive that you don't use them either.
Malaikat wrote:So you're comfortable in making the generalization that anyone who knows a thing or two about computers or network security are socially retarded and hideously deformed?
Yes, quite comfortable.
Malaikat wrote:That's a staggeringly insightful piece of journalistic genius. Convicted criminals and the tragically poor are statistically less literate than the remainder of the population.
Except the United States has the highest level of incarceration per capita in the developed world -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarcerat ... ted_States so, there are more "convicted criminal and tragically poor" in the US than anywhere else it would seem. People who aren't idiots aren't these things, right? I also take exception to the assertion that being poor is anything more than an indicator of a person's propensity to commit offences which make them liable to imprisonment.
So does this mean that on a whole Americans are more prone to comitting offences? Or that because they can't read they are unable to live a conventional life in a conventional law abiding way? Or is it because they are much more likely to be detected comitting offences because they are unable to read the privacy statement on Facebook and therefore post their criminal acts to Facebook, not realising that law enforcement can easily look up their publicly accessible details?
Do you think there is a connection between being American, being an idiot, not being able to read, and being more likely to be in prison due to all of these factors, or just one of them?

I'm not arguing with you over your stupid analogy.
Mens Rea wrote:Well if you had posted articles saying that women unattractive then I could reasonably come to a conclusion that you don't find them attractive, and if you don't find them attractive that you don't use them either.
You suck at metaphor. I'd have to draw you a map so you could understand your own damn analogies...which, once again, I'm not about to do.
The fact that I, and others in the security community, dislike Facebook on the pretense that it's lax with the private data of its users doesn't mean that I don't recognize it as a powerful and useful tool. You can hate something and rely on it at the same time. Women included.
Mens Rea wrote:Malaikat wrote:So you're comfortable in making the generalization that anyone who knows a thing or two about computers or network security are socially retarded and hideously deformed?
Yes, quite comfortable.
Like I said, you're an idiot.

You're offended that poor people commit more crimes than the middle class?
I'm sorry?
Mens Rea wrote:So does this mean that on a whole Americans are more prone to comitting offences? Or that because they can't read they are unable to live a conventional life in a conventional law abiding way?
I think it means that statistics isn't an exact and infallible science.
Do you think there is a connection between being American, being an idiot, not being able to read, and being more likely to be in prison due to all of these factors, or just one of them?
You're the one who was trying to make the connection. I'm an American and I'm not an idiot, imprisoned, or poor.

I swear its gotten to the point where the Facebook bots can no longer even comprehend the idea of a social friendship without being 'friended' with someone on Facebook.

My friends and family on FB already know I'm a big-time gaming nerd, so no real point there.
I have a set rule of my own that I don't use any apps on FB, nor to I cling to the myriad 'causes' that come my way from the people I know.
Also, rule number two, I'm not friends with anyone I don't actually know IRL to some degree, with minor exceptions to those I've known for years through internet communities.
As for the planes, trains and automobiles arguement, if the maintenance/inspection standards were the same for automobiles, as they are for airplanes, AAA wouldn't be making money on tow services.
Also, I'm in America and my daughter in the 2nd grade already reads at the 5th grade level.

I think we should change the debate
facebook maybe lame
but getting some old UO players back on the shard = cool
hell maybe you guys have a myspace u can post it on. some web forums you chat on.
I also disagree that "people already know I'm a huge gamer" is a reason not to post a status update about the shard. People post about the weather 7 times a day why not do a hey "Secondage is having daily pvp tournys" once every few months.

I hear ya man, but I know my friends and the gamers already know where I'm at.
The vast majority are taking the news like a junkie friend just relapsed.
Maybe I'll ping a couple of the old timers that aren't on the social networks to see if they'll come party.
