Re: Newbies
This was another reason why I've been asking for stricter stat loss penalties. The proof is in the patch notes, it proves it's era accurate.

No I don't think anything should be changed. That is what makes ultima online so great is the fact that anything can happen at any given moment. I mean people who are new shouldn't be hanging out in places like brit graveyard. It just how the game works, if you leave guards protection anything goes.
Thats why you just get your hiding really high and be cautious everywhere you go. And I have been helping new comers all day long just like people are helping me. I started 2 days ago and starting to remember how to play.
In this game when your new you are going to die a lot its just how the game works. And it's also what makes the game so rewarding, the fact that it can be very challenging at times.

Re: Newbies
All in All, I think it just calls for more of us to be aware. Yea, we have our share of griefers. But, we can take steps to help any and all newbies out. I've killed my share of newby chars. But, when I do I try to rez and if I do loot it is extremely light. But, rarely do.
There is a group of newbies that hunt by one of our orcs houses. The first time they died and were rezzed which led to some fun rp, and now they hunt there often. Which is fine by me. I'm in it for fun and not the griefing of other players. Cept the griefers of course they have it coming till the cows come home.

Re: Newbies
IPY and DIVINITY lost hundreds of players over griefers and people saying "oh dont worry, thats the way UO was, they will get pked its okay, people will stick around and if they dont they are pussies" and failed to do nothing.
The community of UO is not the same it was, people do not make friends as easily to hunt with, and the whole internet in general has involved into a bunch of assholes or soloists. That is why you need to adapt to it.
Relying on players to give out gold (2-10k) randomly to newbies that
1) are only in irc /visit forums like its their lives
2) are at the right place at the right time.
is the only way it happens, and even still, people play UO because it is a MMPORG not a single player game. After awhile not having people to actually play with that are on your level, and all that you come into contact with are assholes and pkers, you will eventually grow bored of the game and move on. Because lets face it, UO would be a HORRID single player game.
This is my last comment on this, failure to act will show in the future.

Re: Newbies
Just to confirm, this was per account not per character, once you loose your young status, it was gone on all your chars. The young system is a great idea and here were the era accurate rules:
Young status for 40 hours played or 700 skill cap is what it was.
Young players cannot attack/do damage to other players.
I think the young player system would be a good idea. Just thought id add my thoughts.
Re: Newbies
You don't need anything in game to help noobs. If they are truly new to UO you merely need a big guide that explains:
1. How to download, patch, and connect.
2. How to setup an account.
3. Which city is recommended to start in.
4. Where the good hunting spots are from that city.
5. How to avoid being killed. Bank often. Etc.
If its an all in one guide then if they figure out how to install and play they'll naturally see the rest of it.

Takes a bit more than a guide though it does help. So, I'm with you on that Ronk.Ronk wrote:You don't need anything in game to help noobs. If they are truly new to UO you merely need a big guide that explains:

Keuse> People once took responsibilities up on their shoulders and ran with it. It's not that Uo/Internet has evolved or anything of that nature. It's that people wanna sit back and have systems to every little thing for them.
Wanna help out the newbies cool, Start a guild with those of you who are all like minded. You don't have to give every newby money. Advice gones a long way, and you don't have to be around to interact with every newbie to have an affect. IF your guild is founded on certain principles and the such then your members that stick around will act and help the way you would.

give a man a fish he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish hell eat forever.
what im saying is dont give handouts to noobs like 10k gold n shit teach them how to make their own money. i wasent handed shit out when i started i had to go hunt for my gold for a house, regs, etc.

Everyone thinks they are galad the griefer/thief, nignog the racist closet racist biggot, or reskill the newbie 300x over because you are laughing irl.
Secondage doesn't have much of these types of people because they have all quit, but there are enough still to make new players quit.
If you played IPY you know what playerbase I am talking about
the same playerbase that now is in any MMPORG that offers the ability for freedom to interact between players Ie: AOC, Warhammer, Somewhat in wow( but the GM's in wow are nazi's), and soon to be completely killing off the playerbase in the upcoming Darkfall.
Re: Newbies
I agree with the author..and being a former Divinity player--having seen the shard go from 300-less than 100 players--I have to say I'm a little worried about this shard.
New players/newbies are the backbone of any shard--and let's face it, Newbies were what made T2A-T2A. I don't remember tons of 7xgms, I remember running into PK's with 70-80 archery!
-------
I also agree that we don't need special implementations for Newbies like myself though to help my experience be better. (A nice newbie guild would be cool though) No, what we need is more people on this shard who have established themselves to take some time out of their macroing/farming and just help us. Don't think of it as charity or "wiping our asses", think of it as an ACTUAL WAY to give back to the shard that I know you all love.

Re: Newbies
Oh, and I'm not asking for Pk's to spare us.. getting PK'd is DEFINATELY part of the experience. But keep in mind there's a big difference from PK'ing and Griefing.
If your a mage and you PK a noob warrior, there's no need to strip him bare. Even if you have a warrior character, are you really going to use my his/her bone armor?
And if the noob comes back to loot his body (after you looted of course) DON"T KILL HIM/HER AGAIN. Then you're just being a--pardon my langauge--a nooblet.

Re: Newbies
I did not bother to read all the replies but the young system came in March 99. Most of this shard is taken from the Nov 99 range, Young status would be VERY accruate to implement.
I also don't see how this would hurt the shard or anyone at all, killing GY noobs just makes you a douche bag,t here is no gain from it and all you do is make people quit.

Re: Newbies
I brought up a few things from the Sep 99 patch changes in IRC and everyone told me to stfu because they aren't considered T2A and are "Pre:UOR" as they put it, even though we have things from Mar 99 and I'm sure if I looked, even beyond that.
Young player system could only benefit here, you guys get nothing from killing GY noobs, it only causes players to quit. They need the week to get their skills up etc., remember, not everyone is a macro whore like you or even knows wtf they are doing for that matter. I would love if blues would stand up for once on this shard, but I NEVER see it happen, and along with 15 characters (this is a whole nother discussion) no one has a set role. Let's face it, hardly anyone ever helps out or defends them, a young player system could only benefit.
