The argument for spamming attack last and tabbing comes down to the auto defend. I'm not quite sure if this was the feature you were talking about being in and out of the era, but if this is the case that is simply a false statement. Auto defend existed from the very first day of Ultima Online all the way up past Age of Shadows expansion.
There is a reason people use these stupid tactics that wasn't possible to do back then. One of the main reasons is the attack last feature in the third party application Razor itself. There is no way to fix this solution without having the source code for the application. This will not happen because RunUO holds the rights to distribute there software as they like. I also doubt they would code a Razor to suit another shard's needs that is also their competitor.
The reason people spam tab is to avoid wasting their swing. The way the '99 era combat system worked was a feature where you could manipulate the swing delay of your halberd reducing the delay by 4.5 seconds to 2.0 seconds. If you removed these features people would be able to hit you with a halbered every 2 seconds without any counter measure such as making you wrestle. If you remove that you would also have to remove a lenghty chain of other key features in the t2a era. That is simply something that will not happen.
There are still some key fixes left for combat that need to be implemented as soon as possible. It will help to make it more accurate and hurt the ability to tab spam. I'm hoping the degree of effectiveness to render it will be greater than I'm predicting, but this probably will not be the case. Spamming attack last is pretty much worthless now because of a change we added to both spamming and tabbing. Anytime you attack or tab you take the same sort of penalty on your combat delay that movement causes. However, since tabbing already has a spam cap this was kind of useless to prevent this from happening. It still can benefit someone from spamming it to refresh their swing with in two seconds. With attack last there is no cap so it hurts you more in the long run.
The left over combat changes and bugs that are left should help a lot for PVP. I have already got it written in code it just needs to be added to Derrick's side of things and tested thoroughly. He has a lot of stuff on his plate so I have no idea when he will be able to get around to it. I hope soon.
