This adds a bit of spice and gives you something to do once you are established (compete with your friends). The rewards should be minor and people should be competing for the glory and to be known as the best.
This really seems justified - it's sort of NEA to have tournaments and stuff, but its also NEA to live a groundhog day existence with no future to speak of.
