My god mung, just hire a freakin fighter or pally. I gmed three different combat skills on two chars over night. Don't use a stupid polar bear.

Your doing it wrong, tactics gains come from actually hitting something, so fighting a character with gm weapon skill will slow your tact gain. Also weapon skills will gain slow if you do not stagger what you fight. For instance, if you are 0 swords, fight a cow with a dagger until about 40 (as cows have about 30 wrestle), then switch to a npc fighter from 40 to about 75 (because they have around 50-70 weapon skill), now find something with gm skill, such as a Paladin, and you can gm the skill. But you will likely still be missing about 5.0 points of tactics. No problem, just fight something that you hit frequently. I like to use an npc seeker of adventure because they have very little weapon skill and you can heal them. especially the one i had that had an axe instead of a sword and shield.
went from 99 tactics to 100 tactics in like 30 mins on that one.
was only getting .1 or .2 per hour from a pally from tactics skill of 90+
