I've always found a med/mace dexer the most fun to play in random pvp. Mages dominate group pvp because of basically guaranteed damage from spells while if a group of dexers attack the same person they miss ~50% of the time.

I have to say for 1v1, 2v2, and even 3v3 or 4v4 running fights med dexxers are beyond words to play. Once numbers get beyond 3v3 or so you basically just get quad explode deathed  since most teammates heal mages first.

But anyways i've played mages for years and have had literally dozens of characters but the one that always makes me smile is playing a med dexxer.
Server Wars on Metropolis for example:

Tons of fun.

Holy shit.. that was the worst Vid ever. You carry a vanq, do nothing but cast weaken twice and hit 2 people while your little zerg syncs.. Then you ran away from +-. made me laugh, keep posting vids of being shit.. it proves points!!

Of course i'm rolling Vanqs and being cheesy, it was server wars...But yeah you for sure need to ride my cock harder about me and some randoms avoiding a 5 or 6+ man vent sync from +- and friends, lol. SERIOUS BUSINESS.

Once upon a time Mazer used to pvp by himself, after dieing horribly and getting wtf owned by a collection of "good" solo pvpers he then decided it was time to stick to the dueling pits. There he met some like minds of tankmage, dueling, ruleset pvp elitists, and joined up with them. He now ventures out with 2 or more buddys so his painfull recolections of solo pvp will be forever lost to sync dumping.

My use of dexers throughout UO history has been pretty minimal. In the cases where I have worked up the skills on a dexer (including magery, etc), I have usually become frustrated with them as a character class - I consider them just a roll of the dice. During UO:R I had a 6xGM LJ with magery and a bunch of supreme acc vanq axes. That was probably my most successful production-shard PK ever. It accumulated over 100 kill counts and 60k bounty before finally taking a dirt nap to a client crash - while PKing solo.

However, Pre UO:R and UO:R, I have used mages for probably more than 99% of my time spent playing. Manual timing, self-selected casting, disruption and that great feeling of satisfaction when you hit last target on your ebolt, full well knowing the other person is about to hit the floor. You just don't get that with dexers. You're forever praying "OH GOD, PLEASE HIT".

Dexers are also a fucking pain to kill - especially the ones who run out of the screen.

I remember when it took skill to play mages because you actually had to target your opponent's avatar rather than just hit Last target. It also use to take skills to play a dexer cause you had to double click the bandages and target your avatar.

The entire PVP/PVM system is a joke now (well, has been for years), I don't think saying one template is more 'skillful' than another.

You could argue a dexer relies on luck to win, which actually means it takes more skill to drop a mage, because that mage is capable of dropping a high damage combo in just a few quick seconds, how will you survive?

You could argue that a mage relies on luck to win, because if his spell combo comes out to be crap, or he gets a 12pt hally hit (or none at all), his combo is trashed.

Everyone who duels or watches duels, or follows any pvp has heard the expression "you only won cause you never missed your hally hit" or "you only won because I missed with my hally"

The whole system is based on luck when everyone is rocking broadband connections on quality hardware with hotkeys for everything their 7x character is doing.

Skill went out the window years ago.

Dexxer vs mage has never really been a skillful match-up. It just comes down to how much the dexxer hits or misses to allow a mage to do a complete dump. On the field it hardly matters though because any 'competent' dexxer will be 10+ tiles away before the mage is done casting his second big spell. Really, there's no reason for a dexxer to die 1v1 on the field unless he's a total scrub. That's all there is to it.

You can talk about luck in mage duels, but there's a reason why some people win the majority of their fights. Luck does play a factor (especially on this shard with the wide range on damages and interrupt % chances) but in the long run, it averages out and the better mages will still stand out.

Okay I'll add a few things to my response:

Dexxers are still lots of fun. But much more fun in town battles or where there isn't a lot of room for your opponent to run. I remember the massive town battles that used to pop up on OSI. Then it usually became dexxers x-healing at the front lines and mages healing and nuking from the back. Field pvp is always a toss up. If someone runs away you could be running for hours...

I didn't really like mages until they put in stun punches and disarming. Ya it was really cheesy, but I enjoyed it. I even had a few characters based around the stun punch. My mage/thief/thug was my favorite. Anyone ever have the joy of stun punching someone and dropping dozens of gexplodes at their feet? How about stun punch and drop candelabras? Good times... (ya ya i know it was post UO:R, so sue me)
