But does not break as it should in almost every case. Just doing a simple test with my newbied cloak, wiz hat, doublet, pants, and shoes, ALL of the items provide some AR therefore all of them should break eventually. From further testing, all of the masks, and sandals, provide AR and therefore should be susceptible to breakage.
It goes without saying that the above is regardless of blessed status. The only thing blessed does for you is that it acts as "super newbified" in that regardless of red status the item is unstealable/unlootable.

My crafter broke his newbie axe gathering logs last night; I'm not sure what use this information is to anyone ... (I have a spare newbie axe on another character, btw; this one I will only use in emergencies ...)

I can tell you that my newbied items on Nexus haven't broken but don't provide armor anymore. I would say they're definitely at 1/* HP. I'll wear some store-bought stuff to see if it ever breaks.
