I have 5 newbie-ish characters and can't farm well yet. So 40k gold is a big number. Although if I set my mind to it I could make that in a few hours.

Nah, Ive been here a little over two weeks and Ive made over 100k on just yew farm sheep wool. Just create a toon with hiding, get him a horse, keep him logged out in Yew and just log in every few hours and harvest wool. Then make shirts or just sell bolts even.
