If it helps think of it like this, you can pk and grief the newbs for 1200 gold and possibly a meager amount of regs or you can leave them be and 1-2 months from now they will be carrying better loot and you might enjoy a fight that is not just instagibbed.
trying to change the way people behave towards new players is an exercise in futility. regardless of how many times you try to explain it using logic, people will always pk newbies in bone armour because they can.

the only thing you can do is prepare yourself for all eventualities by stocking yourself properly, hunting in groups, joining or creating a guild (like this one) and learning how to react in emergent situations.

A lot of people don't get on the forums and even less get on IRC... where can we direct new players to guild representatives in game?

While I applaud the effort of this guild; that quoted post was really not the type of player this shard is designed for. I read posts like that and it doesn't make me want to help those people. The principle of this guild can stand on it's own merit. It doesn't need a poster-boy demanding consensual PVP and blaming scripts; I really don't think this guild could even help that kind of player because the shard will never meet their expectations... no matter how much you try to help them.

Don't get me wrong; I'm all for helping new players. What I think is futile is trying to keep players from quitting because the shard does not meet their expectations of how an MMORPG should function.

I think the post Fede quoted was more like a "the straw that broke the camel's back" type thing for him rather than a mission statement.

Am I to believe that by 'donating' to this 'business' that any assets purchased that are then sold will result in profits being distributed to the donor/s?

Or is it a trust whereby after the purpose of the trust expires the assets will be returned to the donor/s?

Or is this more akin to 'donating' a 'charity', rather than a business?

Where can the company constitution be viewed? All companies are publicly registered and anyone can ask to see the company constitution - this is where the board of directors voting rights to be.

What rights do shareholders have? Do shareholders have special voting rights? Are minority shareholders able to compel majority shareholders to buy their shares upon exit?

Answers now.
I am going to run this thing, as stated before, as a not for profit.
I am going to use a fund accounting base system to account for everything going in and out of this guild. I plan on posting an excel sheet with a balance sheet, a gold flow statement:) Cleverly named:) and if any income is derived from events we hold such as the gambling event I am currently working on, an income statement will also issued every month or need be, earlier. I figured this was the best way to reveal how resources are spent.

I have also been bouncing back and fourth between 3 ways of voting rights.

1. One way which is easy to calculate, but would require more participation then what contributors, I am assuming here, would be more willing to actually participate is giving voting rights as a percentage. If I donate 100k, yomega 100k, marmalade 500k. My, just like Yomega as well since he contributed just as much, voting rights would be 14.3% of a decision making capability. Marmalade would have 72%. This calculation was simply done by dividing the individuals contribution by the total contribution, for example, 100/700.

Obviously Marmalade would probably not want to participate that much. Their are other obvious weakness to that approach I will not get in detail about. Which brings me to the next point.

2. Giving the guild members who benefit from contributions the strict voting rights. If the board is not effectively running this guild, choices can be made from the guild members benefiting. For example, I spent a 100k contribution on buying 100 horses. Obviously, that is a bit excessive and wasteful, the board can be stripped from their duty and replaced, or in the extreme circumstance, all assets and contributions be liquidated and returned to the contributors. I hope the shard has enough confidence in me not to buy 100 horses. I really want to stress the good that can come out of this.

3. Giving the contributors who look at the statements their voting rights mentioned in point 1. And in a seperate pool, giving individuals in group 2 their voting rights. Putting emphasis on the contributors. For example, 70% strength of the result of voting rights from contributors, and 30% to guildmembers. So if 40 percent of the contributors feel I should be replaced or kicked off the board, and 100% of the guildmembers feel the same way, then I, by contract in the first post, am a goner.

People interested in contributing, if you feel their is an alternative and better way to do this please let me know. And if you like one way stated here better than the other please again let me know.

Also, I want to stress getting the contributions in, to increase incentive, the top 3 contributors will have their initials in the Guild abbreviation, excluding me. For example, if Marm donates 300k Yomega 150k and Chum 100k, then the Guild abbreviation will be MYC, and will continue to be throughout the entire life of the guild.

Again to clear any confusion, even if I donated a billion gold, I can't have my initial in the abbreviation.

It would be a nice thing for anyone whom Pk's not to pk the member's of this guild, understanding they are new to the shard and trying to learn thing's about ultima and how the shard works...in that note , most people have never played in this era of ultima online, and don't understand how rule are different in the manner of pvp, which i would like to see a sort of school set up for these players on what spells and actions are needed to defend them self's. Seems only fair!

I just want to put a time duration on the donation if you want one of your initials to be used in the clan abbreviation. I will give people untill tonight by midnight. I know it's a time crunch, but this thing is kicking in gear pretty fast :)

Had to post it like this from an excel sheet, apparantly I can't add files.

Anyways, we have 1 person currently training, and 2 people waiting to jump on board.

Please donate:)

Edit: It looks a lot better in excel:( I can't seem to get it to format well here.

To make sense of this, total buildings net out to 522,000. Gold coins 120,000

Total supplies 16,669.

The gold coins were donated by me and are unrestricted to purchase any supplies the guildmembers find necessary.

Well, all of the donations are in, I am pleased to announce that:

Telamon, Vader, Plaque. Are the top 3 donators!

Vader with a large boat and a small house.

Plaque with a small house.

Telamon, with beginner spellbooks!

VPT is this guilds abbreviation. Please make note of this. These individuals are new to the shard. So please do not attack them. Notorize this to everyone you know!

Thank you guys very much!

For all the donations and participation in the development of this guild.

I apologize about the balance sheet.

I just went through the new member process, I thought it was very helpful to new players.

I was given training weapons, armor, bandages, spellbook, 2 runes(brit and guildhouse), and a willing training dummy plus advice on macroing.

Your teaching them to fend for themselves in a sense, it really reminds me of my old guild back in 2000, they told me what to do when I first started and offered advice and answered questions about anything I asked but at the same time I wasnt being hand walked through everything so it was still fun and new

Apparently I was the start of this project, and man, I wasn't expecting so many things and so much kindness.

Fede set me up with a house right away, with proper regs and 1.5k aids, armor, and swords for my dexer. He helped me (a process of remembering for me really, I haven't played in 7-8 years) with setting up my macros for each character. It was a little rough at first, since my skills are so low on a couple of my chars, but he stuck with it, being available to help whenever I needed something.

I'm extremely grateful for being a part of this. I'm honestly not sure if I would stay around too long on the server if I were limited to killing red NPCs and gy monsters to get skills up. I really owe all the guys behind the idea to get this guild running. I'll pay you back someday, just you watch :)

I think this was a nice idea, and I understand how some people feel about the PKing and griefing. I was killed I don't know how many times in my first few months of playing here. There are still certain dungeon areas that I don't go in very often unless Iam there with 4 or 5 of my guildies.

I agree with chum's suggestions (which I see you have incorporated) regarding not just giving the new players a bunch of gold. You're going to have people that completely ignore the fact that you're asking them to give these players a break. You will probably have people who target them even, but that is the nature of people as someone else said, and we cannot do much about that. You have managed to give these people a fighting chance though, and done so without providing too much easy gold farming to griefers.

A spellbook with Recall, Lightning, Greater Heal, and Mark, is so key to new players, that's a great idea.

I always begin on a new shard with a warrior character, and the very first thing I do is search the mage shops just in case someone happened to sell those scrolls. If that doesn't pan out, I try to earn about 500gp at the Britain graveyard, then head to the Britain moongate and look for player-run vendors that sell those scrolls. It's literally the first thing I do.

Just wanted to pass on that the Minoc Welcome Center has a community chest in there, like Arcott used to have. Feel free to take what you need, and if you have something you don't need, feel free to drop it in. There seems to be a decent supply of scrolls that show up in there, so you can always take a look.
