Having lots of houses is actually kind of a hassle.

I mined my ore and forged my armor selling each bit in town for nigh on a few thousand gold per Britannian day, at best, should I not fall victim to treachery. I purchased a small home via payments to one who trusted in this honest face :).

Whilst also quite the perma-newb, I have not had a problem moving up to larger housing. In fact, I'm so tired of changing homes, I honestly never want to leave my current residence just east of Britain. My first large home was an L shape, purchased at good cost through my previous guild. I only lived there two weeks before a tower opened up in town (IDOCs happen all the time here). Shit, this story is already too long. Point being, I buy towns now with the help of and for the greatest guild mates a nerd good ask for.

To paraphrase Pro, get out more. You'd be surprised what you stumble upon in the wilderness of Britannia in the wee hours of the night. There are also more small home spots than I can shake an ID wand at.

The housing system has never been a problem. You can work up to the large house like EVERYONE else did.

No, you will not be given a large home just for participating.

Your desire for instant gratification and reward will be ignored...as pandering to that desire just creates a class of players that don't stick around and always want more and more for doing less and less.
where have I stated i wish handouts or "gratification and reward" ?

From the reply's the census is that everybody is happy with the housing status as it is

Thanks for the comments and as said I was trying to get a view form a cross section of players

You didn't. But, you did say (bold)
Samorite wrote:Thanks for your input jekkis and you may have some valid points, but it still comes back to getting new players in and keeping them here and the best way is having a chance to place something other than a small

And the housing market is based on players hording spots on multiple accounts therefor forcing the price up
While this isn't directly saying that you think n00bs should get hand outs, insinuating that n00bs need to be able to directly place large houses as a retention effort is a little off base. Perhaps if there wasn't even a place to plop a small down, I might understand their frustration (remember: that's how it was on OSI). But, since small house spots are plentiful, and it only takes a few hours to get enough gold for a deed... I can't see what the complaint is.

Also going to +1 to Pro's statement that people should be out looking. There are large spots open out there, all someone has to do is put more effort into looking and less into forum whining. In fact, I know of an L-shape spot that's open at this very moment. Also, not too long ago a large brick got placed near my tower in a spot that had been open for MONTHS. Either nobody bothered to look, or they did what I did... Assume that a large footprint house wouldn't fit and as such didn't bother to try. Only thing that had been in that spot prior was a small that decayed long ago.

As far as house hoarding driving up the housing prices... Sure, but not by some insane amount. The mark ups here on UOSA are perfectly reasonable. If the average price of an L-shape was 500k or more, then I'd agree with you. Since that's not the case, I think you're making the house hoarding out to be a bigger spectre than it is.

Ehh... when I started playing in '99 I saw no available house spots anywhere ever. I started walking around as a ghost across the length and breadth of the world checking for IDOCs (they changed the mechanic here; you can't do that on UOSA :/). I also got involved with a guild that had houses so that I could train safely. When I finally found an IDOC that wasn't already camped by other veteran players and I placed my small I was over-frickin-joyed. Sure, you want the nice things that everyone else has but other people got here first. You're going to have to work hard to get there and learn to be content with your lot in the meantime.

Buying a house should take a while, as long as people are always selling then the housing market should be fine. If they are hording everything, that's when it becomes a problem. BTW, I plan on buying a Large Tower (hopefully soon) would it truly be the price of the deed plus 40 - 60k on top of that?

While it is possible to get a tower for that much it is becoming less and less likely. I noticed a slow but steady increase in the value of anything above smalls. When I came here two years ago towers for 20k over deed were fairly common. Now I see the same towers selling for keep deeds and some as high as tower deed x 2. I once got a bargain on a fire island tower for 5k over (thanks boon :D) ended up selling it for large brick over deed and that was a bargain too because I could have gotten much more I just didn't want to rip anyone off.

Unless we suffer a catastrophic drop in the player base I can't see high prices changing anytime soon. That said, if you run around the world I am quite sure you will find a place for a large home, it may take sever hours but the spaces are out there.

Bye.

A little short of me, yes. A little rude, perhaps.

Thing is, if you can't be arsed to work for things you aren't going to make it here long term anyway. So why bother trying to retain you? If it's not dealing with housing monopolies, it'll be getting PKed and dry looted that would make you quit. Or being scammed. Or stolen from.

There certainly are other free shards out there, and they all most certainly suck, because they're custom garbage servers. Point out to me another free shard that does such a good job of replicating the actual game as it was played-- not some custom abomination where people do nothing to bank sit while clad in neon.

I'm sure if you read the entire thread again a few times, you'll catch the section where I mentioned that we do have mechanisms in place that allow players to place their own houses, such as house decays. You'll also probably notice the part where a person actually offered a spot for a large house for free.

Selective reading ftw?

Also, what Vhyx said. If you don't have the tiniest bit of perseverance, this shard probably isn't for you. Yeah, I'd love to see more players here, but to be honest not at the cost of the type of game world we enjoy. A world where you can't take anything for granted.

A change of mentality is the key here, I think. This game isn't so difficult that you couldn't survive, but if all you do is just whine and want to skip to the end, it's not going to happen. Instead, start trying to enjoy the path that leads to the outcome, not just the result itself.
