This thread delivers.
In just four fun-filled pages I learned that BeatingU got banned; that Mens Rea is probably a crappy attorney (or on his way to being one) who's entire understanding of contract law came from his first contracts class (or Wikipedia); and that Sandro (as usual) has very strong opinions about something he's dead wrong about, but isn't afraid to express them using grammar that would make his 6th-grade English teacher face-palm.
Shame on Braden for destroying all that misinformation with a concise statement dispelling all the contract/fair market value nonsense...

Any shrinks in the house who can clarify which stage of grief this quote represents?

I went to Wikipedia, Mens Rea's source for all the legal knowledge he misinterprets, and based on this article, I believe the stage of grief represented is "denial."

I provided some quality time in Vent helping a guildmate with their PC problems, much more than the help I tried to give Paradox recently.
When we were successful in saving the PC, the person said "Anything you need, just let me know". (Note: They did NOT imply in-game in any way, just the term 'anything' which as you might understand is a figure of speach when someone helps you a lot.)
Had I been a lamer, I could have easily asked for any number of in-game riches or rewards for my services.
To me, that's not the point of the game. I've had a lot of help from my guild but I've also put in a lot of time and work to get where I am in the game so far.
I'm not going to sully that by cheating my way to a higher level of wealth or what have you, by negotiating out of game.
In-game transactions with real world currency or services were the original point of downfall for OSI, in my opinion. The shards wouldn't have gone to shit nearly as fast if people couldn't buy their way into a 5x7GM account with a castle, etc.
There is no reason to do this on a free shard, especially this one. If you want to buy your way to the top, I'm sure there are plenty of admins who will take a 'donation' on other shards for you to have whatever you want.
P.S. Derrick, I'll give you $20 for a purple horse with 100000hp. <-----------JOKE!!!
I honestly dont see any reason why you couldnt trade services in UOA for services IRL. I could easily mow my own yard, but why waste my time when I can be doing more important things and pay some kid to do it for me?
Selling because you are quitting is one thing, but offering services like labor or time invested in UOSA for IRL services seems legit to me. Or should Derrick go back and start banning everyone who ever asked for forum signatures, computer help, homework assistance, etc.?
UOSA gold has become a currency in and of itself, and should be valued, especially since Derrick created it. Its a proud sign of how successful UOSA is.

Because services IRL have IRL monetary value, such as services in UOSA have IG monetary value.
There should be no interchange between RL and IG, at least that's how I understand the rule.
Yes, it states money clearly, but I consider it the same because my time is money to me. If I preferred, I would spend my free time moonlighting and making real money. However, I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford free time for myself that isn't about personal gain, only pleasure. I take pleasure in helping friends IRL, and IG, so I suppose in that right, you are somewhat correct.

I wonder if coke smugglers could launder money by "buying" virtual items? I wonder if the potential for this could get Derrick busted by the feds?

Attaching a real world value to in game items encourages exploits, scams, bots and other douchebaggery that I'm glad UOSA has avoided so far. The rule was posted, thy scoundrel is banned, sucks to be him.

More accurately, UOSA has worked hard to resist.
There are still exploits, scams bots and other douchebaggery going on around here.

Maybe I missed it, but for all the BS and opinions on what Derrick "should" do with the game he's running, I didn't see anyone explain WHY there's no selling in-game assets or WHY this (like all the other emulation shards) is free to play.
So here it is. Our ability to play old-school l33t UO on UOSA is contingent upon Derrick not getting a cease and desist letter (or worse, civil complaint) in the mail alleging infringement for the IP EA owns (i.e., the trademarks and copyrights associated with the art, characters, names, and other aspects of this game), or for breach of the End User License Agreement.
To this point, EA hasn't burnt the cash to go after freeshards, probably recognizing that the people playing servers like UOSA aren't going to play the current bastardized version of UO anyway. That could quickly change if a freeshard owner starts charging to play, or if players are attracted to the shard in order to make real-life $$$. The more real dollars are changing hands, the larger the target on UOSA's back.
And for all of you who think that the EULA won't stand up, consider that Blizzard won on that point in the 8th circuit against a WoW free server:

Beatingu worked harder then 99% of you posters to accumulate his wealth. He started a lumberjack on this shard named drzzit and purchased his first house, never got a single hand out, never asked for one. You can ask someone to create a forum sig for you in RL and expect payment, but your can't advertise everything you have just looking for offers because In your
Mind you find it illogical. Yet if you simply take the time to ask that person why they phrased something the way they did, I'm pretty sure they will let you know. If you have predetermined that how something was phrased in your interpretation is the absolte truth, even though it is just an interpretation. Then you have basically created the divides we see as far back as the creation of religious texts. The difference here is you can ask the creator of the original text what he meant. If what he says your already bias towards, and you are the ruler, well that's how many civilizations of the pas and present have been run.
