Ship speed.

This is more a question to the general populace than a hard assertion: Does sailing speed seem a bit slower than it should be?
Personally, it seems slower to me, but it's been so long I'm not sure how much slower.

seems right to me

It definitely seems slow to me, though to be fair I didn't do much sailing back in the day. I voted for 20% faster.

I always assumed that "slow" speed was = unmounted walking and Normal speed was = unmounted Running.

OK, I just did an empirical test to get some numbers. Full "forward" speed is almost exactly the same as unmounted walking speed, and about half the speed of unmounted running. "slow forward" is less than half the speed of unmounted walking.
This was done by picking two points a small distance (two screens or so) apart along a fairly straight shore, and walking/running between them, then sailing/slow sailing between them using a stopwatch. There's some margin of error here, but these should be correct to within 1 second:
Walking: 15 seconds
Running: 7 seconds
Sailing slow forward: 39 seconds
Sailing forward: 15 seconds.
If your assumption is right, and I'd lean in the direction of it being so, then ship speed is off by a lot more than the 10-30% I was guesstimating.
I'll try to run the same test on OSI later. I don't know for sure if they've ever changed ship speed, though.

A while ago, when I first bought a boat here, I saw "forward" and thought it was using the speed/code for "slow forward". So it may very well be the case that ships should be 100% faster.

Unexpectedly had some extra time this morning, so I ran it. I had to go out a little further due to a parked boat on Pacific, so the margin of error takes another half second hit or so, but the results are nonetheless compelling:
Sail forward: 9-10 seconds.
Slow forward: 27-28 seconds.
Run/walk were exactly the same as UOSA, so there shouldn't be a substantive lag factor. (Also my ping is actually not much worse to UOSA from a gameplay standpoint; 90-100ms vs. 20-30 to Pacific).

Add in the small lag difference and it does look to be about 20% slower here.
I remember "right/left" being slow but not as slow as it is here...it is painful

Simply compare the current speed with the demo or production shards for verification.

It does seem slower than normal.

Teg already did this on prod shard 3 and 5 posts up

Prod shard Pacific:
Sail forward: 9-10 seconds.
Slow forward: 27-28 seconds.

If this is deemed worth of change. Would it be much trouble implementing this? Lord knows this would cut the travel time between spots by a significant amount.

When I first bought a boat on this server, I noticed the speed difference right away. I always have used UOAM to track down sos bottles, and when dropping a marker and then sailing to it, I would check to see how fast I was moving along.
Boat speed on this shard is too slow, and should be increased. I will leave it up to you guys to determine how much.

We based the timing for ship speed on the known ability to be able to cast in front of the ship when sailing slow, but I think we hit it on the slow side.
We're going to try to make this more correct.

It seems to be slower, it needs at least 10%
