Best crafting skill for making money?

Hey

Im going to start working on my first crafting skill, and I want to start with the most profitable one first, to make som money along the way - but what skill would that be?

Back in the old days on Novus, I used to do carpentry and craft loom deeds to sell to vendors, but I dont know if thats as profitable here ...

To make money you have a few options.

Ingots and boards do sell if you want to go with the straight mule character.

If you want to craft, I believe the old Stratics standby was shields for carpentry and fancy shirts for tailoring.

I think fancy shirts would be the minimal investment, and there are some public rune libraries that have locations of sheep and cotton spawns.

Personally, I like smithing. I know many, if not most, players prefer to smelt their wares instead of hocking them but I choose to sell mine. Smithing got me my first house, got my scribe rolling (which once you get started is a great source of income in itself just from the grind to gm), and funded the macroing of a couple chars.

The choice is really yours. If you want minimal resource gathering, probably tailoring shirts. If you don't mind that, either smithing or carpentry (plus you can always sell the raw materials if you get bored), but I think smithing has the edge on carpentry as you move up in skill.

Oh yeah... there is always the fisherman route. It will suck in the beginning, but very little investment and you can make a thunter for the level 1 maps until you gm to do mibs.

You're allowed to unattended macro from land which will get you to the 90s and the shoes you sell until that point will get you about halfway to a boat.

If you do go this route though, watch out for pirates.

i started out by mining and selling ingots to other players until i got my first house. not hard to find people buying iron ingots, they're always in demand

Yea I have found that Ingots are always in demand. Even running to Brit Bank and asking if people need some usually nets a couple.

A question on top of this, I am looking to get into crafting for players and money as well and I was wondering if anyone has a killer Skill Template that would be worth while. I would probably want to do Mining and Carpentry and Tailor on the same Char yes? So I guess I could set it up as follows:

1: Mining
2: Blacksmithy
3: Tailoring
4: Lumberjacking
5: Carpentry
6:?
7:?

And then what would you suggest for the last to skills and STR, DEX, INT Levels? Or would you set up different skills then this? Thanks for the help.

If you're looking for ways to sell to NPC's, GMing Bowcraft made me in the area of 160k, enough to buy a house and buy all the leather I needed to GM tailoring as well, plus plenty extra. I've also just recently GM'd Inscription, and that's quite profitable too, but a bit harder to manage than bowcraft.

I prefered Bowcraft to the usual of fancy shirts and shields because lumber was a lot easier for me to harvest, and typically grew very near to all the places that would buy my bows (which are fletchers, weapon vendors, and blacksmiths)

Very nice! I did not think of that. Carpentry is the main volume of skill for bow craft isn't it? What do you need for skills and how do you become such a fine bow-crafter?

Bowcraft is its own separate skill. No tools need, just your newbie dagger and some wood. Buying a carpentry tool does help, since boards only weigh a quarter of what logs do. I believe I bought it up to 30, did bows till about 60ish, then crossbows till 90ish, then heavies to GM. Once you hit a decent level of success on a particular item, you rival the 4gp per board you can get, but you gain skill as well. If you want to give it a shot, I recommend Jhelom to sell in. Lots of weaponsmiths and blacksmiths there, and decent amount of lumber if you hit all three islands.

As a note though, I'm pretty sure an exceptional bow by a Non-GM is the same as a GM bow. You just get to write your name on it. Thankfully, I like putting my name on things.

Nothing would suit me more than being able to write Tom Bombadilo on a well crafted bow. Thanks for the information.

Also, you may want to add some degree of tinkering to your template. I got tired of carrying around all sorts of tools, so now I just have 2 tinker tools and 20 ingots, and just make what I need. There's also some demand for GM locked boxes and GM traps. However, GMing it will foster a growing hatred for heating stands.

Very true. So what template for a character would you suggest as far as skills. And on a craftsman, what is a good setup for the player skills, STR, DEX, INT? Say I wanted to make bows, tailor and be a blacksmith, pretty much an all around material craftsman, what do you suggest?

1: Blacksmithy
2: Mining
3: Tailoring
4: Carpenty
5: Bowcraft
6: Lumberjacking
7: Tinkering

?? How does that look

so what would my STR, DEX, and INT be?
Thanks

That's pretty much what my skills look like :) The exceptions are that carpentry is still in the 80's (I hate carpentry), and I'm sacrificing some lumberjack for 30 magery, because being able to recall from a runebook helps me a whole lot. Right now, my stats are 100STR/100DEX/22INT.

What is the lowest INT to have to be able to recall? obviously 30 Magery is the skill. I think I will do that as well, substitute one so i can have another sounds great! Thanks.

11 Mana to cast recall. 22 lets me recall in, and recall out if it's a bad scene. I just fill my runebook with recall scrolls. I can technically cast Recall at 30 magery, but it would be bad comedy to watch me try.

Thanks for all of this. I think I have a bright future ahead of me as a craftsman. See you out there.
