Item ID Question

Does my character have to actually appraise the item in order to get the increased value from the vendor, or do I simply have to ID it?
appraise it with the item id skill
I'm not sure if VDP pricing (for npc vendors) is working here (ie: if you will get the higher price). It might be, might not.
