UO Second Age

Well, I'm a fella who likes selling his goods shouting things like "X for sale, only Y gp! It's the best price you can find!" rather than posting a thread. But it seems yelling doesn't work. Some folks in IRC told me it was removed after a recent patch. I couldn't find any info in patch notes section, so I believe it's not something that's done in the name of era accuracy. (I don't think yelling and whispering is somehow out of "era" but you never know...)

So! What up?

How recent? Yelling was working at the end of March (used a Yell: "Bank" macro to get to those damn bankers easier).

How far should it go? I've tried yelling from my bank boat in Cove, and can never get a banker (even though they're like a screen away).

I think you have to see them on AllNames, or they have to be maybe one tile off screen. I believe the book said "twice as far as speech", so imagine how far away you can be from an NPC when saying "Vendor Buy", and then double that.

Weird. Sometimes I can even see them and it doesn't work (nor does regular speech). Maybe it's because part of the water is "outside" of town?

I don't know.

I tried it in Delucia, at the mage hut. I couldn't access my bank with a normal "Bank", but when I tried Yelling it, it worked - through the rattan wall and the stone wall to the banker inside near the edge of my screen.

I dont think there are any bankers in cove anymore...So your gonna have to yell extra loud to get the bankers attention in Vesper or something.

Shouldn't make a difference - case in point: bucs den.

I was unaware yelling made a difference to getting NPC's attention. I know on OSI you could make a macro

Emote: Whistles

Assuming you were more than 1 tile from anyone on the screen, they would just see:
*Whistles*
The pet would still follow you from the other side of the screen.

This suggests NPCs didn't give a damn if you were yelling or whispering - the range check for speech was the same.

That came later on. I remember having Yell: Bank on my macros until I started RPing in about 2000-2001, when I started using Whisper: Bank for the same thing.

wow, I dont think I ever knew you could yell.

I tried whispering "bank" here, NPCs will ignore you. Whether or not yelling makes a difference, not sure.

umm actually, i didn't test if i can open my bank box a bit further away than i could without yelling. (nor do i care, to be honest.)

but i did test yelling: my one screen away toon didn't hear me.
