PLAYER INTERACTION, BUILDING POPULATION

I wonder if its possible for Derrek to only restart the server once a week like every sunday night of something. May be a whole lot more convienant for alot of us for the simple fact, 1) Building our characters, sooner we get our characters done, the more the field gets fills up with people and player to player interactions start happening. If you have a bunch of people macroing in hidden spots away from town killers or whatnot, if a newcomer joins and see brit empty because everyone is out macroing, might be hard for them to stay. UO Divinity's problem why people are quiting and the server is dieing, maybe we can learn from it. 2) For alot of us UO Addicts, we grew up, got jobs, going to college or wherever life takes you, we simply cant play as much as we would like to. So what i believe most of us do is, macro, come back from work, play. Since the server restarts everyday at 7:00am, some of us, it will be inconvienant for, like me for example, i have to leave work for 5:50 in the morning, work a normal 8 hour shift, come back and "Lost connection" because the server restarts so much. If its a hardware issue, Derrick ill be more then happy to donate to up the hardware to were we dont have to restart so much. If its not a hardware issue, lets get this fixed!

Hopefully i have some support on this from others, im not crying or bitching and whatever happens, ill always play here. Just trying to help improve as i hope others will speak out also. I believe skill increase is perfect, hard to gain is a great way to not have a bunch of 7x chars, tons of money, and 15 houses then quit. So having the skill gain nice a slow is a good way to keep the players here because they simply put alot of time and effort in getting to that point. Well okay, thank you all for reading, time for me to get back to work.

The nightly restart is done for a few reasons, the biggest of which being shard integrity. I could go into the details of this but basically it is a protection against losing or corrupting data. Also, as anyone with Windows knows, the thing needs to be rebooted once in a while or it gets doggy. It also allows for the server wars period which is a good opportunity to test things like house placement etc.
I'd be willing to discuss moving the restart to a different time, however the current time works very well for me since any maintenance I need to do on the server can be done before I go to work in the morning.

Absolutly. Keep it the way it is, i didn't realize those reasons you mention. I just run into alot of servers that have it going around the clock, just thought i might ask. Is there anything i can do to go beyond windows and have this going 24/7 and one server war per weekend for 30 mins long or something ? To many server wars and a ton of house space i dont really thing people are trying to test removing there house and worry about someone stealing it, who knows. Also too many server wars might not help because it will simply get abused to much, if that makes any sence, it should be more of a privelege in my opinion. To give everone uber items and have them running around killing each other and remove guards and such, i believe this can be event people can look forward to and make it a peek time. I believe it may increase population and im also willing to help with $$. Just throw me a price and we will go from there. Thanks Derrik.

We do graciously accept donations on the website at

If the shard continues to grow at it's present rate we will be looking into some major hardware upgrades soon. The shard restart is much more an issue of data integrity than anything else. We want to load the world from save daily so that if there's any data corruption, which has never happened, we'll find out about it before more than a day has passed. We also currently do off-site backups every two hours with a backup server ready to go in case of trouble. Additionally, we make code changes to the shard on an almost daily basis which cannot be applied without the restart.

I never said that myself. Im not whining, or complaining, im just trying to make things better. If you disagree with what iv posted please do so, so this way i can maybe knock some sence in me that im wrong. I wasn't really looking at the fact that you have to be 7x to play the game, i was looking at an overall experience of always being online, as far as never a downtime except for night on weekend day. Like sunday for example. For some weird reason, i believe this will help. Would just like to thank you for responding, your the first besides derrik to do so!
Thank you!

From what i see, this shard is going to be the largest server for gameplay and population. So its rather exciting to see where we will be in 6 months
Thanks!

Don't be such a pussy by waiting until you are 7x to go on the field, adventure it out, macroing isn't life.

On the topic of macroing, since it's allowed, why not allow characters to macro up quickly the first 300-ish real skill points in skills that require zero resources or skill?
I realize that such skill-ups are not era accurate but niether is allowing unattended macroing.
My thought was to triple or quadruple the skill-ups of skills like hiding, snooping, herding, meditation, eval int, anatomy, etc. that don't have instruments or weapons that wear out nor reagents or bandages consumed. There's absolutely zero skill involved in increasing any of these. All the current skill-up rate does is create a situation where people spend 3 days amcroing basics to increase str, dex, etc. before they train "real" skills. And this bonus only applies when the character's total real skills are under some predetermined number (like 300). Maybe the increased gain would only get the character to 75 in any given skill at an accelerated rate as well.
I'm all for leaving the current skill-up rates on magery, resist, combat skills, provocation, musicianship, tradeskills, etc. That'll leave the 7X GM as an accomplishment.

one of the good things about UO is that its a hardcore game (the only game where you can steal from a player, kill, cut the body, get the head, and eat some ribs out of him

), please dont try to make it easier... if you wanna play some easy stuff you have wow and a lot of cartoon-like games
-edit-
and you dont have to macro if you dont want too, we have some players that just went to battle without macroing and they gain their skills fighting/using

If this turns into a vote about what time to reset the server, I love how it is now. Happens 10 minutes before I walk out for work.

Keke! You made me giggle, twice. So let me take your advice, i just started a char, 50 in magery, 50 resist. I got about 7 spells to my name, thankfully one is heal. Ready to duel ? Make sure you bring your 7x because by what it sounds, you lure newbs into the woods and have sex with them. I dont understand where do get the 7x from ?> I made this thread as maybe a possibility that if it was a fulltime server, maybe more will join, not the silly fact of macroing but thou u mention it, i guess that would solve one more thing wouldn;t it ? Thanks for bringing that up.
