I've been herding since yesterday, hit 100 last night but my strength was having steady gains until it hit 90. Its not locked and i have plenty of points left to put into it. Do i need to do something else to get 90-100?

Herding could do the trick, will just take longer. I suggest you get an axe, chop some logs, use your dagger to make kindling, and light the kindling. Be sure to have both lumberjacking and camping pointing up. If you can make a nice little macro for it you should not take more than 30 mins to get to 100 STR.

yea you need to gain skill to gain stats relating to that skill
so if you are at 100 herding, you cant gain anymore skill so your stat gains will stop
as far as i understand it

Do these skills to 15 or so and you'll get some points real fast:
Mining
Arms Lore

One char got to 100 str by GMing swords and another by GMing wrestling. My fencer only got to 85 or so by GMing fencing, and wrestled for the rest.
My lumberjack/miner was 100 str long before any of my other characters, and he's a bench sitter.

I usually just buyout as many random skills as possible to use up the 700 points, then lock everything, set herding up and macro away until my stats are where I want them.

This is not true at all.
My 7x GM tank mages altered their stats (gained dex) without any change in skills.
To gain, you just need the skill to be pointed up, if its pointed up and all other skills are locked, you will still gain stats.

True, you don't need to gain skill to raise stats
However if a skill is @ 100, that particular skill will no longer raise Stats no matter how long you macro

Unless you're using all 700 skill points, in-which case it works just fine as punk just explained.

Yes but even @ 700 skill cap the skill you use to gain stats must not be @ 100 or you won't gain stats
I was just giving the OP a bit of info that a GM skill will no longer raise your stat points
