Going Red off of NPCs?

Back on OSI, when quite bored, I used to go on servers that I'd never frequented, make brand new characters and go on killing sprees. I would nag a few out-of-town miners or lumberjacks and maybe get up to 60 swords or so before a character with actual fighting skills found me and destroyed me. Oh, and I'd be red by then, so the game was over. I liked to think that I was more of a civilian murderer than a warrior PK - I would wield cleavers or clubs, dress like a butcher, etc. Call it a bit of an RP adventure, being the only time I ever did anything PKish.

Anyway, I have a vague memory of going Red off of NPCs, wandering healers and so on. I remember being annoyed, because it ruined my game prematurely. Does anyone remember anything like this? This would probably be some time in 98.

Whether or not you recall it back then, does it happen here?
