Ran across this tonight:

Apr 6 1998

Save money by cheating -- sorry, by creative use of game mechanics and
try to eat whilst in combat. You get "You cannot eat while in combat"
message, but keep double-clicking or hitting your Last Action macro,
and eventually "You are too full to eat any more".

Here is the one patch note I could find, which probably fixed getting around this.

An exploit involving eating while fighting was fixed.

I would consult the demo on this one. Things were alot different in 98.

Pretty sure this has been tested in the past on the demo and it was possible to eat during combat.

You are correct, you can eat during combat in the demo. Given the demo's hazy patch history and the similar date of the references above I was unsure it would matter. However, I must have missed the first patch note referencing this, as it was implemented back in '97. Had it still been around it almost certainly would have been in the demo. Ah well.
