Bears in PVP?

I remember reading the PVP Tamer article that Kavian found, which was used to make an argument for a bunch of changes to how taming and animal control works in a recent patch. I've tried for a bit, but I can't seem to re-locate that article, only posts referring to it. If anyone could post a link for me, I'd really appreciate it.
But anyway, the reason I'm posting is that I remember the article referencing the power of bears in PVP. It said something along the lines of "you might not realize it, but most mages are powerless against grizzly bears".
So here's my question for you mages out there: Are you powerless against bears? My guess is no. If we looked at that article as a source of era-accurate info, then should we not consider every claim it makes? If we agree that mages are not powerless against grizzlies, then how do we explain the author's position?
a) he didn't know what he was talking about? (sounds a little harsh)
b) he was trying to make young tamers feel more secure all alone out there, when not yet skilled enough to roll with fire-breathers?
b) the mages of his time were less potent than ours, sans-razor, GM skills not being the absolute norm like they are here, etc?
What do you guys think?
I'm not trying to challenge White Wyrm speed or anything stated in the article. I've just had my interest peaked by this little tid-bit, that's all.
