I don't remember guildstones behind or beside houses, but I do remember them in front of them (like, on the grass next to the front steps of a 7x7).

Wait, now I'm confused... it also says:

Note - The stone will not appear if:
the stone is placed in an illegal location (which is anywhere outside of the house, excluding the front steps)

So I guess when they say "in or next to a house" the "next to" means on the steps. I dunno... I could swear I saw them next to the steps, too.

It was possible to place them anywhere at one point in time but that was later changed to houses only.

You saw a lot of stones just outside houses on Pacific. This was because the GM's would move guildstones from houses for people though, I suppose to give the GM time to claim it or whatever.
