Mares in TLL

I remember vaguely taming mares in the wilds of the Lost Lands, early early on. I don't see anything wrong with it, it just surprised me when I just got fireballed. Is this accurate?

Mares have firebreath, and yes, it is accurate.

Well, I knew that, lol. I thought they took them out of the wilds the same time they took away their flying ability (which i'm pretty sure was very soon after TLL were released).
